Fill a PDF Form in Chrome and Edge (No Extra App) — a practical WhatsNew2Day switching guide
Ways to put an answer on a PDF, taken from Google Chrome Help and Microsoft Edge pages checked on 24 October 2026. Where two official pages use different words, both are shown.
JobWhat the checked pages sayHow to use that wording
Type in a form in ChromeThe download article says: go to an online PDF form, type in the PDF form, then select Download Edited. The manage-PDFs page says the viewer can fill out and sign paperwork.Use “type in the PDF form” for that article. Do not add a field-click path the page does not print.
Place text or a signature in ChromeAdd text: choose font, style and color, then click where you want the text. A signature on the same page is Draw, then Pen, then Done.Add text is new text where you click. The page does not call that a replacement of a sentence already in the file.
Fill blank fields in EdgeThe learning page says select Edit, select the blank fields, type, then select Save. The features page says select Add text, select a location, and type. The PDF reader article lists basic form filling and says inking can fill out PDF forms.Follow the page that matches the control you see. Edit, Add text and ink are not the same sentence.
Save or download the filled fileChrome: Download Edited, or Download then With your changes or Without your changes. Chromebook: Save. Edge: Save, choose a location, name the file, Save.“With your changes” and “Without your changes” are both on the manage-PDFs page. Pick the one that matches the file you need.
Print, including a PDF copy from Chrome’s print windowChrome: File, then Print, choose the destination, then Print. The Drive sections of that article say click Save as PDF, then upload. Edge: Settings and more, then Print, or the system print dialog. The Edge print page does not name a PDF printer. Chrome’s “Save as PDF” sentence is in the Drive sections, and the Drive for desktop route requires that install.
A scan, or a page with no blank fieldsChrome Help says scanned PDFs of physical documents are converted on the device so the text can be highlighted, searched, copied and pasted. That sentence does not say the scan becomes a form. Edge’s field steps start with blank fields. Add text in Chrome, and Add text or Add notes in Edge, are the documented ways to place new text.Searchable text is not a form field. The pages checked do not document creating interactive fields.
JavaScript forms and XFA in EdgeThe PDF reader table says basic form filling, and that JavaScript forms aren’t supported, from stable version 79.0.309.71. The constraints say XFA, a legacy format of forms, isn’t supported. A separate policy, PDFXFAEnabled, says Edge won’t enable XFA support if the policy is disabled or not configured. The version is the documented stable-channel minimum, not a promise about the Edge version on your computer. The policy is not a button on the PDF toolbar.

Chrome: type in the form, and a second page for added text

Two Chrome Help pages, both read on the Computer version on 24 October 2026, describe this job differently. “Download a file” has a section titled “Download an edited PDF.” It says you can edit a PDF online and then save the edited version to your computer. The steps are: go to an online PDF form, type in the PDF form, and select Download Edited. The tip under those steps says you can open the edited PDF you saved and continue editing. “Manage PDFs in Chrome” says you can open, search and edit PDFs, and that with the Chrome PDF viewer you can highlight, annotate or draw, add text, fill out and sign paperwork, and take personal notes. Its Add text steps are: select Add text, choose the font, style and color from the sidebar, and click where you want to add text. Its signature steps use Draw and Pen, then Done. When the browser window is smaller, that page says the right panel doesn’t show and a compact panel shows at the bottom. “Edit” on the manage-PDFs page is the list that follows it. That list does not document clicking a sentence that is already in the PDF and replacing its words. The Mac guide on this site is the separate question about Preview and existing text.

Open the PDF in Chrome before you type

The manage-PDFs page says: on your computer, open a PDF in Chrome. You may need to open it in a new tab. To open or edit it, select Menu, then Open in new tab or Download. The download article’s PDF setting is separate from that menu. At the top right, select More, then Settings, then Privacy and security. Select Site Settings, then Additional content settings, then PDF documents. Select Download PDFs or Open PDFs in Chrome. The manage-PDFs page points at the same choice with the address chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments. For an ordinary download, the download article also says you can right-click a PDF and choose Save Link As, and that you can turn on “Ask where to save each file before downloading” under More, Settings, Downloads. Those are ways to store the file. They are not the Download Edited step.

Download the Chrome result, or save it to Drive

Keep the two download labels apart. Download Edited is the control in “Download an edited PDF.” With your changes and Without your changes are the controls in “Download a PDF” on the manage-PDFs page. That page adds that Chromebook users select Save to keep changes. Save to Drive is another section on the manage-PDFs page. It says the feature is unavailable in Incognito mode or a Guest profile. The steps are: open Chrome, open a PDF, select Save to Drive at the top right of the viewer, select the Google Account (or Use a different account, or enter an account if none is signed in), select Save, then use Open in Drive. The page says the file is in the “Saved from Chrome” folder. If the download folder was never changed, the download article gives the default locations: \Users\<username>\Downloads on Windows 10 and up, /Users/<username>/Downloads on Mac, and /home/<username>/Downloads on Linux. This guide did not download a file, so it does not report which of these controls appeared in a viewer.

Edge: Edit for blank fields, Add text for a blank area, ink for a mark

The Edge Learning Center page dated 19 November 2024 says you can fill in the blank fields on a PDF instead of printing the form, filling it by hand and scanning it. The steps are: open the PDF in Microsoft Edge, select Edit in the toolbar, select the blank fields and type, then select Save in the top toolbar. The same page says you can add new text, images and shapes by selecting Add notes. The Edge features page answers “How can I fill in blank areas with text after I open a PDF?” with Add text: select Add text, select a location, start typing, then select the text box to move it or change the font. It also says you can save a copy with highlights and markings from the PDF toolbar. Microsoft Learn’s “PDF reader in Microsoft Edge” is the deployment article. Its feature table lists “Basic form filling (JavaScript forms aren’t supported)” at stable channel version 79.0.309.71, and “View and print local, online, and embedded PDF files” at the same version. The inking section says inking comes in handy to take quick notes, sign, or fill out PDF forms, and that you can use color and stroke width. The accessibility section says the keyboard can move to parts of the document a person can interact with, such as form fields and highlights, and that caret mode can be used to interact with form fields. Pressing F7 asks whether caret browsing should be turned on. None of these sentences is a version check of the Edge installed on a particular computer.

What Edge’s own pages say does not work

The constraints on the PDF reader article say XML Forms Architecture (XFA), a legacy format of forms, isn’t supported in Microsoft Edge. The same article’s form-filling row says JavaScript forms aren’t supported. A different Microsoft Learn page documents the policy PDFXFAEnabled, “XFA support in native PDF reader enabled.” If you enable the policy, XFA support in the native PDF reader is enabled and users can open XFA PDF files in the browser. If you disable or don’t configure the policy, Microsoft Edge won’t enable XFA support in the native PDF reader. The policy page says it applies on Windows and macOS at version 104 or later, that Android and iOS are not supported, and that a browser restart is required. It is a Group Policy, a registry value, or a Mac preference. It is not a control in the PDF toolbar described on the learning page. This guide does not tell a reader to set that policy, and it does not claim a particular form is XFA. The Chrome Help pages checked the same day do not mention XFA or JavaScript forms, so this guide does not invent a Chrome limit for either one.

Printing, and the print-to-PDF wording that is actually on the page

Chrome’s “Print from Chrome” article says to open the page, image or file, click File then Print, or use Ctrl+P on Windows and Linux or ⌘+P on Mac, select the destination, change the print settings, and click Print. Further down, under saving to Google Drive from print preview, it says “Click Save as PDF” and then upload the PDF. One of those routes requires the Save to Google Drive extension. Another requires Drive for desktop. A third is an upload at drive.google.com. “Save as PDF” is printed in those Drive sections. The standard-printer section says “select the destination” and does not name that destination. Edge’s “Print in Microsoft Edge” article, on Microsoft Support, includes PDF documents in the header-and-footer steps: open the website or PDF document, then Settings and more, then Print, or Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS. It also documents Print using the system dialog, with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Option+Command+P on macOS. The same article’s opening questions include “Help me set up a clean print-to-PDF workflow in Edge,” and the body that follows does not name a PDF printer. This guide does not supply that printer’s name. It also does not say that printing closes the form fields, because neither print article says that.

When the page has nothing to type in

Edge’s learning steps begin with blank fields. If the PDF does not offer blank fields, that step has nothing to select. Chrome’s “type in the PDF form” step is likewise about a PDF form. For a scanned PDF, both the manage-PDFs page and the download article say that scanned PDFs of physical documents are converted with optical character recognition so you can highlight, search, copy, paste and find text, and that the conversion stays on the device. They do not say the conversion creates form fields. Placing text is the other documented job: Add text in Chrome, Add text on the Edge features page, and Add notes on the Edge learning page. Creating new interactive fields is not one of the steps on the pages checked for this guide. The form-creation task on this site is that separate job. Preview on a Mac is also a different reader; its fill and signature steps stay on the Preview text guide.

When the browser page is the wrong tool

Edge’s learning page says the built-in reader can view, edit, print and save PDFs without the need for third-party software. That sentence is about the jobs the page describes. It does not extend to XFA when the XFA policy is not configured, and it does not extend to JavaScript forms, which the PDF reader article says aren’t supported. Chrome’s help never says to install a separate PDF application for the type-and-download steps. It does require an install for the Save to Google Drive extension and for Drive for desktop. If the form still will not take an answer after the documented field step and the documented Add text step, compare an edition whose own pages document that form, and keep the claim labelled as vendor documentation until a saved file is tested. The Edge PDF reader record, the Edge versus PDF24 Creator comparison, and the Acrobat alternatives pages are the next checks. This guide does not restate their prices and does not report a test of any of them.

Scope of this guide

We read the linked Google Chrome Help pages and Microsoft Edge documentation on 24 October 2026 and wrote this guide from them. We did not install, run or time Chrome or Edge, open a PDF, type in a form, save a file or print a page for this guide, and nothing here is a hands-on test result. Menus can differ by browser version, operating system and window size; check what your own screen shows. The pages checked do not display a separate price for the built-in PDF viewers.

Common questions

Can you fill a PDF form in Chrome without installing a PDF app?

Chrome’s download article tells you to go to an online PDF form, type in the PDF form, and select Download Edited. The manage-PDFs page says the Chrome PDF viewer can fill out and sign paperwork, and its Add text steps place text where you click. Those steps use Chrome’s own viewer. They do not tell you to install a separate PDF application. Saving the printout to Drive can require the Save to Google Drive extension or Drive for desktop, and those installs are named on the print article. The Chrome pages checked on 24 October 2026 do not mention XFA or JavaScript forms.

How do you save or download the filled PDF in Chrome?

Use the label on the page you followed. “Download an edited PDF” says select Download Edited, and that you can open that file and continue editing. “Manage PDFs in Chrome” says select Download, then With your changes or Without your changes, and that Chromebook users select Save. Save to Drive is available from the viewer when you are not in Incognito mode or a Guest profile, and the file is placed in “Saved from Chrome.” If you never changed the folder, the download article lists the Downloads folder under the user profile on Windows 10 and up, Mac and Linux.

How do you fill a PDF form in Microsoft Edge?

The Edge Learning Center page says to open the PDF, select Edit, select the blank fields, type, and select Save. The features page says to select Add text, select a location, and type, then move the box or change the font. Microsoft’s PDF reader article lists basic form filling and says inking can fill out PDF forms. On Windows 10 or 11, if Edge is the default PDF reader, the learning page says you can double-click the file or drag it into the window. Ctrl+O on Windows and Command+O on Mac open a file from the computer. Saving from the toolbar is Save, a location, a name, and Save again.

Which PDF forms does Edge say it does not fill?

The PDF reader article says JavaScript forms aren’t supported, on the same row as basic form filling, from stable version 79.0.309.71. It also says XFA, a legacy forms format, isn’t supported. The PDFXFAEnabled policy page says that if the policy is disabled or not configured, Edge won’t enable XFA support, and that enabling it requires a browser restart on Windows or macOS version 104 or later. Android and iOS are listed as not supported for that policy. The learning page’s fill steps apply to blank fields. A scanned page that Chrome can make searchable is not, on the pages checked, described as a new form.

How do you print a filled PDF, or print to PDF?

In Chrome, use File then Print, or Ctrl+P on Windows and Linux, or ⌘+P on Mac, choose the destination, and click Print. The same article says “Click Save as PDF” in the sections about saving that printout to Google Drive, and then upload the file. The Drive for desktop and extension routes are installs. In Edge, open the PDF, then use Settings and more then Print, or Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on Mac. The system print dialog is Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Option+Command+P on macOS. The Edge print page does not name a PDF printer, and neither print article says that printing turns fields off.
