Why duplicating first matters
Apple’s Preview guide carries an explicit warning: changes made to a Preview document are saved automatically, so if you want to keep the original PDFs in addition to the combined one, duplicate each file before combining. Dragging pages into a file changes that file. Working on copies keeps a clean way back if the order is wrong or a page goes to the wrong document.
Adding single pages versus whole files
Apple documents two routes. To add selected pages, drag their thumbnails from one PDF’s sidebar to another’s; Command-click selects pages that are not adjacent. To add an entire PDF, drag the PDF icon from Finder to the sidebar of an open document. You can place pages at the end or between existing pages, and drag thumbnails to reorder.
Checks before you send the merged PDF
A merged file can look right on page one and still be wrong. Compare the total page count with the sum of the pages you meant to include. Scroll the thumbnails for order and rotation. If the sources contain fillable forms, bookmarks, links or digital signatures, test what you need in the combined file; merging is a page operation, and you should not assume every interactive feature carries over unchanged. Never combine the only copy of a signed or confidential document.
When Preview is not the right tool
Preview is free and built into macOS, which makes it a good first choice for occasional merges. If you regularly merge many files, need to edit existing text, or work across Windows and Mac, compare dedicated PDF editors.
