No maximum length is published for a Snipping Tool video snip

The Snipping Tool help page describes a video snip as a video clip of a rectangular selection. The steps are: open Snipping Tool, select Record, then New, or press Windows logo key + Shift + R; select the area; select Start; when you are done, select Stop. You can then save the recording or select Edit in Clipchamp. Searches for a Snipping Tool time limit do not match a number on that page. The pages checked for this guide on 20 October 2026 do not document a hard stop after a set number of seconds or minutes.

Windows 10, an older app, or the screenshot shortcut

Surface help separates the two cases: Windows 10 users can record with Clipchamp, and Windows 11 users follow the Snipping Tool video steps, including Windows logo key + Shift + R. The August 2023 Snipping Tool update (version 11.2307.44.0) described the combined capture bar and the same video shortcut, and said the rollout was beginning with Insiders. If the PC still offers only Rectangle, Window, Full screen and Freeform image modes, the installed app does not match the recording update those posts describe. Update Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store, then try the video shortcut again.

A delay or a pause can look like an automatic stop

The 8 December 2022 announcement listed two preview issues: a slight delay after Start, and the Snipping Tool window not restoring when a new snip was started from inside the app. The 26 January 2023 update on that page added pause and said reliability improved, for version 11.2212.24.0 in the Beta Channel. Those notes describe that preview. They do not assign a duration to a finished file, and they do not say current retail builds still stop on their own. If the capture bar offers pause, that control was part of the January 2023 update. Select Stop to end the recording, which is the finish step on the current help page.

An administrator can remove recording without setting a timer

AllowScreenRecorder is a user policy. Microsoft Learn says disabling it means screen recording will not be accessible in Snipping Tool, and enabling it or leaving it unconfigured means users can access screen recording. The default is enabled. It applies to Windows 11, version 24H2 and later, on Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise / IoT Enterprise LTSC. The same table marks Pro as not applicable. Use this check when the recording control is missing on a managed PC. It does not explain a clip that starts and then ends at a particular minute.

Look in both save locations Microsoft has named

A recording that “stops” and leaves no obvious file may already have been saved. The help page says a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, and points to Snipping Tool settings for automatic save. The 7 June 2024 Dev and Canary post, and the 14 June 2024 Beta and Release Preview post, say screen recordings are automatically saved to the Screen Recordings folder inside Videos, and that the setting can be turned off. The Insider posts also say features in those channels can change before a general release. Open the file from whichever folder your version used, or from the Snipping Tool preview, and use Save or Edit in Clipchamp if that button is shown.

Clipchamp’s 30-minute cap is a different product limit

Clipchamp’s help page, checked on 20 October 2026, says there is no enforced limit on Clipchamp editing-project length, recommends 10 minutes or less for performance, and says webcam and screen recordings in the video editor are limited to 30 minutes. That is a Clipchamp recording cap. Snipping Tool’s help page tells you to select Edit in Clipchamp after a video snip, and it does not copy the 30-minute figure onto Snipping Tool. If the recording was started inside Clipchamp’s editor, use Clipchamp’s page for the limit. If it was started in Snipping Tool, the Snipping Tool page still does not publish a maximum length.

Sound problems and longer recordings use other pages

Optional system audio and microphone recording is covered in the Snipping Tool audio guide, from the 31 August 2023 Insider post. For a local file you can compare with other Windows recorders, use the screen-recording pages for Xbox Game Bar, OBS Studio and ShareX. Xbox Game Bar in our catalog is the built-in capture workflow for a selected game or application. OBS Studio and ShareX are separate free Windows options with their own documented workflows. Choosing one of them is a scope decision. It is not evidence that Snipping Tool failed at a measured minute.

Scope of this guide

We read the linked official Microsoft pages on 20 October 2026 and wrote this guide from them. We did not install, run or time Snipping Tool, Clipchamp or any other recorder for this guide, and nothing here is a hands-on test result. Menus can differ by app version, Windows edition and whether an administrator manages the PC; check what your own screen shows.

Common questions

Does Snipping Tool screen recording have a time limit?

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool help page does not publish a maximum recording length. It says to select Start and, when you are done, select Stop. Clipchamp’s help says webcam and screen recordings in the Clipchamp video editor are limited to 30 minutes. That figure is on the Clipchamp page. It is not stated as a Snipping Tool maximum on the Snipping Tool help page. These pages were checked on 20 October 2026.

Why does Snipping Tool screen recording stop on its own?

The Microsoft pages checked for this guide do not document an automatic stop timer for a Snipping Tool video snip. A December 2022 preview post described a delay after Start, and its 26 January 2023 update added pause. Pause and a short delay are different from a clip ending at a fixed time. If the recording control is missing on a managed PC, the AllowScreenRecorder policy can make screen recording inaccessible. That policy removes access. It does not set a recording length.

Why is Snipping Tool screen recording not working?

On Windows 10, Microsoft’s Surface help points screen recording to Clipchamp, and the Windows 10 Snipping Tool instructions do not list a video snip. On Windows 11, use Record, then New, or Windows logo key + Shift + R, and update Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store if that control is missing. Windows logo key + Shift + S opens a screenshot. On Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions of Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, an administrator can disable recording with AllowScreenRecorder. The policy table marks Pro as not applicable.

Where is the file if the recording seemed to stop?

Check the Snipping Tool preview and its Save or Edit in Clipchamp action. Also check the Screenshots folder named on the Snipping Tool help page, and the Screen Recordings folder inside Videos named in Microsoft’s June 2024 Insider posts for automatic recording save. Those posts describe Insider rollouts of specific Snipping Tool versions, and settings can turn automatic save off. This guide did not record a clip, so it cannot tell you which folder your installed version uses.
