Do you find that you’re now too warm when you wrap yourself in your trusty puffer or teddy coat, but you still can’t face the elements armed with just a jacket? So it’s official: he’s been wearing a trench coat for a while.

There is no coat more typically British than a trench coat. The perfect layer for days when the forecast looks moody, a stylish trench coat can be worn to stave off any fashion crisis.

When it comes to design, no one does it like British fashion house Burberry. Their iconic check-lined trenches are as desirable now as when they were first released in 1912.

However, while the term “trench coat” instantly conjures up an image of a beige, Inspector Clouseau-esque color, they’ve undergone an evolution lately.

Since Daniel Lee took over Burberry as creative director last year, we’ve seen the trench coat in various colors and prints, while the silhouettes are more relaxed, with details like dropped waists and oversized belts.

Now the High Street is also full of new color combinations, fabrics and details.

Cherry red is proving to be an on-trend color for 2024, so you’re sure to stand out for all the right reasons in Karen Millen’s belted coat (£165).

Sharp shoulders and puff sleeves give a statement look, while the belt allows you to cinch the waist for an elegant silhouette. Combine it with black boots and let the coat take center stage.

The Anthropologie trench coat (£175) is the perfect grown-up alternative to a denim jacket. Don’t be afraid to double up and wear it over jeans and a blouse for a casual yet put-together outfit, or throw it on over your favorite midi dress.

Do you want a high fashion look at a High Street price? New Look’s blue-grey trench coat (above left) is just £59.99.

If you’re looking for an updated trench coat but prefer a subtle shade to a bold colour, Jigsaw’s faux leather patent style (£399) is a great option. The oversized look, epaulets and belted design create a structured yet flattering shape.

So whether you go for a colorful, sleek look or keep it classic, a reliable trench coat will help you get through spring in style.
