- William Gomis did not make weight for his UFC 301 fight with Jean Silva
- The Frenchman was unwell and was staggering while weighing 143 pounds.
- The two men will meet Saturday in a featherweight fight unless it is cancelled.
The fight between William Gomis and Jean Silva at UFC 301 was canceled after Gomis was seen in a worrying state at Friday’s official weigh-in.
The Frenchman looked extremely ill when he weighed in for his featherweight fight with Silva, and came in underweight.
Gomis weighed in at 143 pounds, 2 pounds lighter than the weight for Saturday’s fight at UFC 301 in Rio de Janeiro.
And journalist Ariel Helwani has confirmed that the fight has been canceled after hearing from the fighter’s team.
He was expected to have a strong fight having won his last 11 matches, with an overall record of 13-2.
William Gomis arrived two pounds lighter for his UFC 301 fight against Jean Silva
After seeing two Gomis fights canceled in a row, fans were hoping to see him return to try for a fourth victory inside the octagon.
However, it teetered on the scales and left fans confused as to why it sold out so much.
The fight could be canceled because of how bad it looked and that is something to consider.
However, if the fight continues, you won’t lose any money: fighters are only penalized if they weigh too much.
Journalist Guilherme Cruz wrote in X: ‘William Gomis didn’t look good on the scale but still made weight (143 pounds with his clothes on) for a featherweight fight.
Apparently he vomited moments before weighing. The Commission’s doctors followed him closely. Jean Silva, his opponent, weighed 146 pounds.
Gomis is a promising fighter among the UFC’s new wave of French signings and has won all three of his fights with the promotion.
Silva, meanwhile, has only had one fight in the UFC, stopping Westin Wilson in the first round on short notice after Gabriel Santos withdrew.
Gomis is on an 11-fight winning streak and has won all three of his UFC competitions so far.
Silva weighed in at 146 pounds and hopes to build on his easy victory over Westin Wilson.
The main event of UFC 301 will be Alexandre Pantoja taking on Steve Erceg with the flyweight title on the line.
Pantoja, the defending champion, is fighting in front of his home crowd with a 27-5 record, facing surprise 10th-ranked challenger Erceg, who has a 12-1 record.
