Phillip Schofield will return to television tonight in Channel 5’s Cast Away, more than a year after he quit ITV’s This Morning following a “reckless” affair with a junior colleague.

The 62-year-old broadcaster will be seen stranded on an uninhabited island off Madagascar for 10 days without food or water and without production equipment.

Announcing his return to the country’s screens last week, Schofield described the show as: “My story of survival, both on a desert island and off it,” after leaving ITV’s This Morning in May 2023.

Phillip’s daughter, Molly, became emotional as she declared that she is “proud” of her father.

The former presenter sat down with his family to say a few last positive words before leaving for the remote island.

Joanna Lumley has a message for a Phil…

‘Keep your knives sharp, spend the day trying to find wood or you won’t be able to eat anything.

‘I’ll be thinking about you all the time and I’m actually a little jealous. Much love.’

Phillip says the cancellation was like “the biggest grenade that went off” in his life.

Phillip said it was a “fortune” for his career before everything fell apart.

Introducing the show, he recalled: “It all came to a very sudden and abrupt end and was cancelled; it’s like the biggest grenade of your life went off.”

‘You know you’ve let people down, you know you’ve let yourself down.

‘I will always regret it. I ruined it. I made a mistake. I hurt the people around me.’

He added: “I’m not doing this because I’m poor, I don’t have any rights.”

Phillip starts the show…

The show began with Phillip making the dramatic statement:

“I think there will be a lot of people who will hope that he never comes back”

‘I locked myself away from the outside world, but now I want to see if final isolation can finally free me.

‘…Will this be my chance to reflect or will I be consumed by my inner demons?’

Phillip Schofield reveals how a stranger’s act of kindness helped him amid a battle with suicidal thoughts and admits he’s glad his late father wasn’t alive to see his fall in heartfelt confessions in Cast Away.

In the upcoming show, Phillip opens up about his suicidal thoughts after leaving This Morning and reveals how a chance meeting with a stranger helped him.

He explained that he had locked himself away at home while struggling with his mental health, but once his mother fell ill, he was forced to leave and visit her in hospital in Cornwall.

Schofield recalled: “I walked into the hospital reception and found a big guy with a big red face, big arms and tattoos and I walked into the reception trying to find where the intensive care unit was.

‘This guy said “Schofield” and I said “yeah” and I thought “oh shit” and he said “can I give you a hug, mate?” and I said, “Actually, do you know that you can?” and he gave me a huge, huge hug and said: “They’re all shitty colleagues, they’re all shits.”

Eamonn Holmes says Phillip Schofield “deserves to be in exile and is addicted to fame” in a furious rant ahead of the embattled star’s TV return and says he is “proud to have thrown him under the bus”.

While discussing Schofield’s much-maligned television return on Channel 5’s Cast Away, Holmes, 64, made her feelings clear.

When co-presenter Isobel Webster revealed on GB News Breakfast on Monday that Schofield claimed he had been “thrown under the bus”, Holmes was quick to respond: “Well, if I’m one of the people who threw him under the bus, I’m very proud to have done it…

“This man is addicted to fame, absolutely addicted to fame.”

Phillip Schofield said he “just doesn’t care anymore” in a sneak peek which saw him go on a “crazy rant” during his return to TV in Cast Away.

Schofield sat around a campfire on Channel 5’s survival show and said: “It’s me giving my opinion as I retire.”

Looking disheveled, he says: ‘I’ll get criticized for this,’ rants Philip Schofield (shakes head). ‘But the thing is, I don’t care anymore. I don’t care. This is me giving my opinion as I walk away.’

During the second episode of the three-part programme, he addressed claims of toxicity on the ITV show as “absolute idiocy”.

“After I left I discovered that there are some people there who could be a little toxic,” he added.

“I’ve never seen it… when you’re on TV, you don’t see things like that, you’re protected, people don’t tell you about it, so I had no idea.”

What is Channel 5’s Cast Away and what other celebrities have had a similar experience?

Phillip Schofield is not the first celebrity to face a lonely survival experience.

Comedian Ruby Wax took on Channel 5’s Cast Away challenge last year and it was a huge success.

After arriving at her new home, Ruby left viewers “in awe” as she wielded a machete to cut down trees and build herself a shelter.

The actress, who has been open about her mental health battle, emotionally confessed to the camera that she was “out of her depth” before declaring in later scenes that “people with mental health are survivors because we know what it’s like to be alone.” “.

Fellow actress Joanna Lumley also made a similar program for the BBC in 1994, where she converted her bra into shoes to brave the island’s treacherous terrain.

Phillip Schofield took a symbolic step to cut ties with “all the toxic people in his life” as the isolation of being alone on an island takes its toll in the final episode of his series Cast Away.

In the third and final episode, Phillip declares that he is ending his relationships with “toxic people”, making a list of names and burning it in a bonfire.

In a clip from the upcoming episode, Phillip narrates: “There’s something I’ve done here that I haven’t shared with you yet, now is the time.”

He then tells the camera: ‘Over the course of my ten days I have written down all the things and all the people that were and are toxic in my life, and that’s how I have it now. It’s there.’

Phillip names anyone on the list, but crumples it in his hand and adds, “That’s it,” before throwing it into the fire.

Waving to the crew, he shouts, “Thank you, see you in 10 days,” before reflecting, “That’s the wildest feeling, oh my God.” Shit just got real.”

“What people don’t realize is that you get hit, but there are other people affected too,” Stephanie, Phillip Schofield’s ever-loyal wife, told him before he became a castaway on a desert island this summer.

Mrs Schofield, 59, has unfailingly supported her husband through an extraordinary and challenging decade which began when he came out as gay and then lost his job on This Morning over an affair with a young producer last year.

Gone was her £2m-a-year ‘golden handcuff’ deal with ITV, as were lucrative deals with the likes of Princess Cruises, We Buy Any Car and Waitrose.
