Australian Jack Della Maddalena has moved into the top five of the welterweight division with an impressive knockout victory over former title contender Gilbert Burns.

The next big thing in Australian combat sports, Della Maddalena, 27, scored the biggest win of her career at UFC 299 in Florida on Sunday.

It was a close fight until Della Maddalena attacked his Brazilian opponent with a knee to block a takedown attempt during the third round.

The knee hit Burns and sent him reeling, with the West Australian jumping on top to finish the fight with elbows and punches.

“Jack Della Maddalena is definitely on a championship trajectory, wowing the Miami masses,” John Anik said in a commentary.

Joe Rogan said on commentary: “Wow, what a great Jack Della Maddalena moment.

“It feels good,” Della Maddalena said afterward.

‘My plan was to come here, take the money and run. I knew I hurt him. He is the man. There are some scary people in this division, but I’m the scariest.

Della Maddalena called out undefeated welterweight boogeyman Shavkat Rakhmonov after the fight, hoping he could lock horns in a title eliminator with the winner to face champion Leon Edwards.

“Shavkat Rakhmonov,” Della Maddalena shouted.

“I think you and I would be a great eliminator for the title.”

Della Maddalena said during the week he had heard rumors about a Perth card being announced in August or September and would like to get involved.

“I feel like if I beat Rakhmonov, no one will be able to deny me the opportunity to win that title,” he told News Corp.

“That would be a matchup between prospect and prospect, and the winner would then get a shot at the title.”

The Australian indicated that he would also like to fight Colby Convington or Ian Garry, two of the biggest names in the division.

“Look, it would be a dream to fight Colby Covington,” he said.

‘But as for that happening? I don’t think so, no.

“I think Colby is going to go fight someone else, have a terrible performance, and then leave.”
