A cyclist who was sent flying after being hit by a car at a busy intersection when he ran a red light has divided the internet.

Dramatic dashcam footage showed the moment a white sedan hit the BMX rider as he crossed the intersection of Richmond Road and Third Avenue in Blacktown, in Sydney’s west.

The bike flew through the air and landed several meters away, prompting a furious reaction from the cyclist.

The cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, had crossed the road despite the pedestrian traffic light being red.

The motorcyclist then began banging on the passenger window of the car, abandoning his mangled bike in the middle of the road.

The cyclist’s partner, who had already crossed the street, was also seen repeatedly trying to open the car door.

Footage of the terrifying incident was shared on the Dashcam Owners Australia Facebook group on Monday and has since attracted 192,000 views.

The clip was also flooded with hundreds of comments.

Australian drivers were divided over who was to blame, but many believed the cyclist was at fault.

“The audacity to punch the window in anger when it was his stupidity,” commented one viewer.

Another added: “It’s a perfect example of why cyclists should get out of their vehicles to cross the road.”

A third person wrote: ‘The cyclist should not cross when the driver has the green light.’

A fourth person commented: “It was the cyclist’s fault.”

A fifth person commented: ‘There is a good reason why (cyclists) should pay tuition and have insurance.’

Another said: “Play stupid games and win stupid prizes.”

New South Wales Police are aware of the footage, a spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
