Which Nanoleaf smart lights should you buy?

Here are some tips and tricks we’ve learned from testing Nanoleaf products over the years.

Prepare before installing. Decide and plan in advance what you want to do. Nanoleaf lights stick to the wall with adhesive, so it’s possible to remove them without removing the paint, but it’s easier to have the layout already planned and set up. Be sure to use a level to make sure they are straight, as the geometric shapes will make it obvious if they are not.

Plan for power. Don’t just plan your layout, make sure your panels end up close enough to an outlet. You can also try designing your lights to hide the power cord behind something, like a bookshelf or a nearby plant.

Programming capabilities may vary. If you’re using Essentials bulbs, you can only set schedules with Apple HomeKit or Google Assistant.

You will need the Alexa skill. If you’re an Alexa user, some smart devices can easily connect with your Alexa speakers, but you’ll need to add the Nanoleaf Skill to start using your Nanoleaf lights. (Even after adding it, I found that it didn’t work 100 percent of the time.)

Be careful where you click in the app. In the app, your Nanoleaf products will be listed by room and will appear as small squares with an icon and the product name. You must click on the written name to enter the device and examine the colors, scenes, and other options (such as 4D if you are using the 4D kit) for the specific product. Clicking anywhere else on the product box will simply turn the device on and off over and over again.

Find more color options. The app includes a variety of scenes you can use, but you can click the Discover tab (a cloud and a down arrow symbol) to find more lighting designs and download them to your app.
