Fulton Financial to close 18 bank branches following First Republic acquisition

Fulton Financial is set to close 18 bank branches following its acquisition of Republic First earlier this year.

The closures will include five Republic First branches and 13 of its own. Scroll down for full list and locations..

Most branches are in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and southern New Jersey.

However, both Republic First branches in New York City will also remain closed.

In addition, Fulton Financial, the parent company of Fulton Bank, will not reopen its Philadelphia branch, which was temporarily closed after a water main break.

The affected Fulton financial centers will close on Nov. 22, while the former Republic First offices will close five weeks earlier on Sept. 16.

“While it is never easy to close financial centers, it is sometimes necessary after evaluating factors including overlapping service areas and trends in how customers conduct their banking,” a Fulton Financial spokesperson said in a statement.

Most of the branches that will close are within 1.5 miles of another Fulton office, the spokesman said.

Fulton Bank acquired Republic First in April after winning an auction for its assets.

The 32 branches of the former Republic First Bank closed as normal on April 26 and reopened the next day under the Fulton Bank name.

Fulton currently has more than 200 branches nationwide.

The acquisition added $5.2 billion to Fulton’s balance sheet and helped it expand in Philadelphia, a key target area.

Fulton’s assets stood at $31.8 billion as of June 30, up from $27.4 billion a year earlier.

The closures represent a trend as major banks move away from costly physical branches in favor of online services.

Closures can result in significant savings, as operating a stand-alone bank branch costs on average about $2.6 million a year.
