Shakira also spoke to the outlet about her new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, saying she wanted “music to build bridges, empower people, help women discover their own strengths.”
The album was released following her split from her long-term partner Gerard Piqué, 37. The former couple were together for 11 years, from 2011 to 2022, and share children Milan, 11, and Sasha, nine.
“I was in the mud,” he said, referring to their separation. “I had to rebuild myself, put together all the pieces that had fallen apart.”
She previously told The Sunday Times: “For a long time I put my career on hold to be by Gerard’s side, so he could play football,” Shakira said. “There was a lot of sacrifice for love.”
Shakira and Piqué met in 2010 on the set of the singer’s music video Waka Waka (This is Africa).
They went public with their relationship in May 2011, welcomed their son Milan in 2013 and Sasha in 2015.
Speaking about his latest album, he said: “Making this music has shown me that my pain can be transformed into creativity.” The songs are full of anecdotes and some very intense emotions that I have experienced in these two years.
‘But creating this album has been a transformation in which I have been reborn as a woman. I have rebuilt myself in the way I believe is appropriate.
‘No one tells me how to cry or when to cry, no one tells me how to raise my children, no one tells me how to become a better version of myself. I decide that.’

‘My children absolutely hated it. They felt he was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I am raising two children. I want them to feel powerful too (and at the same time) respect women. “I like pop culture when it tries to empower women without depriving men of their ability to be men, to protect and provide too,” he said.
‘I believe in giving women all the tools and the confidence that we can do everything without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I believe that men have a purpose in society and women also have another purpose. We complement each other and that complement should not be lost,’ she added.
