- Found guilty of 39 disgusting acts in August verdict
- The crimes included rape and indecent assault.
Former elite swimming coach Dick Caine has died in hospital aged 78, just weeks after being found guilty of 39 sickening sexual offences against young athletes who trained with him.
Caine, who coached numerous swimmers who went on to become Olympic and world champions, was in hospice care for terminal cancer before his death on Wednesday morning.
On 28 August, he was found to have committed 39 acts, including rape and indecent assault, against female members of his swimming team aged between 10 and 16, between the years 1970 and 1980.
The attacks took place at Carss Park swimming pool in Sydney’s south, as well as at Caine’s home and in his car.
Several of the victims were virgins at the time they were raped by Cain, and one of them said she had never been kissed by a boy before.

The terminal cancer that prevented Caine (pictured) from testifying at his trial took his life on Wednesday morning.
Caine’s illness meant he was excused from answering the allegations directly in court, meaning the case was heard through a special hearing rather than a trial.
His victims were due to make impact statements at a special hearing in December.
In delivering the verdicts, New South Wales District Court Judge Paul McGuire said he found the evidence presented by the victims was reliable despite the significant time that had elapsed since the incidents.
“I am satisfied that each of the elements of each of the offences has been established beyond a reasonable doubt,” he said.
