Thirteen students at a Queensland secondary school were treated by paramedics after eating a plant they found growing in the school garden.

Ambulance crews were called to the shocking scene of Pacific Pines State High School at around 11.20am on Tuesday morning after reports that students had fallen ill.

A Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) spokesperson said 12 of Gold Coast High School students have been released into the care of their families and school staff.

Student number 13 was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition as a precaution.

A Queensland Department of Education spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the school’s priority was the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.

“Emergency services were called to Pacific Pines State High School this morning where several students were treated for a non-life-threatening incident,” the spokesperson said.

‘Further details cannot be provided for reasons of student privacy.

‘The school followed correct procedure and took immediate action to notify emergency services.

“The safety and well-being of students and staff is always the school’s top priority.”
