Neve Campbell is “very excited” to return as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming seventh film in the Scream franchise.

The 50-year-old actress made her debut as the character in Wes Craven’s 1996 horror film and reprized the role in four of its sequels.

However, the performer remained absent from the franchise’s sixth feature film after negotiations over her salary failed.

Campbell recently spoke with PEOPLE and expressed that she was dismayed at not having to see the more recently released Scream movie, which was released last year.

“Those movies have been a very important part of my life and mean a lot to me, and I was sad to miss the last one, to not be able to be a part of it,” he said.

However, the Twisted Metal actress stated that she was happy to have been able to reach an agreement with the producers of the new film and reprise her role.

‘I was really grateful that they came back to me in a respectful way. I think that means a lot for women and for society. “I’m grateful to be able to put myself in Sidney’s shoes again and tell his story,” she said.

Campbell then talked about the impact Prescott had on long-time fans of the slasher franchise.

“I know a lot of fans who say their strength has gotten them through some tough times, and that means more to some people than I ever imagined,” he said.

Development of the upcoming seventh film in the Scream franchise was revealed to the public in 2023, when Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet expressed hope that the series would continue in the future.

The filmmakers spoke with The Hollywood Reporter in March of last year and stated that they would “never give up” on trying to get Campbell to return to the series.

Bettinelli-Olpin added: “We would love to be able to make another film with her and we won’t give up.”

The couple eventually walked away from the project and Christopher Landon signed on to direct the film last August.
