The nine-year-old dog was one of 4,000 beagles that were bred at the Envigo breeding and research facility in Virginia and would be sold for use in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research.
U.S. Department of Agriculture officials inspected the unit and found a female beagle whose paw had been stuck in a loose floor for so long that she was suffering from dehydration, according to court documents.
Facility employees admitted to inspectors that they did not know how long she had been trapped. Another inspection found that nine injured beagles were euthanized rather than receiving veterinary care.
A subsequent inspection found that many of the 196 beagles that actually needed to be euthanized were not anesthetized before receiving a fatal injection directly into the heart muscle, prompting a federal judge to approve a plan to rescue the beagles. The dogs were then taken to the Humane Society of the United States, before being transferred to shelters or groups such as the Beagle Freedom Project.
Mamma Mia was then rescued in July 2022 and taken in by the charity Beagle Freedom Project, and given a forever home by Harry and Meghan a month later.
The presence of Mamma Mia suggests that the photograph may have been taken in Meghan’s Montecito garden, or that Meghan was visiting Abigail with the pet in tow.

Some fans have speculated that Meghan even took the photo herself.
Abigail, best known for her roles on Grey’s Anatomy, is the sixth person to share a photo with the Duchess.
The post comes after Meghan and Abigail were seen together in a series of Instagram photos to support their friend Kelly McKee Zajfen’s new Mother’s Day campaign for her ‘Alliance of Moms’ charity.
Kelly, 44, also received one of the coveted awards and excitedly shared it on social media, saying last week she was “so proud” of the duchess.
