Megan Rapinoe has said those who celebrated her career-ending Achilles injury occupy a “special place in hell.”
The controversial Rapinoe, 38, suffered the injury just three minutes into the NWSL championship match in November, limping off the field as her OL Reign lost to Gotham FC.
And speaking just a few months after that heartbreaking end to his career, he attacked those who reveled in his misery.
‘It’s sad, like I wish that hadn’t happened. I’m just thinking about the arrival of my colleagues, of course it’s sad. …it’s kind of like life,” he began ‘Pablo Torre finds out.’
“We want these perfect stories and I’m a controversial figure, and for people to celebrate it, but also be so disingenuous about it, that that part is kind of funny too.” I say, wow, you guys are in a special place in hell where you’re celebrating this.
Megan Rapinoe became emotional when talking about the heartbreaking end to her career.
Rapinoe had to be substituted just minutes into the last game of her career.
After the match, which the Kingdom lost 1-0, Rapinoe joked that her injury was proof that there was no God.
Unsurprisingly, the comment angered religious people, although Rapinoe claims they “missed the whole joke.”
“Someone needs to control the Christians, they are not okay,” he said, recalling the reaction he received. “They missed the whole joke too.”
Don’t act like you’re surprised he made this joke about what happened or found a dig. I’m like, yeah, I’m going to find a fun dig. Who is it? God, me, religion, the world? I don’t know.’
Host Torre then said: ‘The point is that here is yet another athlete who thinks that the proof of God is that they win and that good things happen.’ And if not, then obviously God does not exist. That’s the joke. Rapinoe agreed with his assessment.
Rapinoe laughed to herself after missing a crucial penalty for the United States last year.
The former USWNT star accomplished a lot in her career, including two World Cup wins, although she missed a crucial penalty against Sweden in the round of 16 of the last World Cup when the Americans were eliminated.
The winger was seen laughing and smiling after the ruling, which angered many fans.
“There are a lot of things more important than this and of course it’s sad,” he told Torre about the way his career ended. “I don’t think that takes anything away from my career, I don’t think missing that penalty takes anything away from my career; it’s all part of it, really.” And if you don’t try, you’ll never do anything.
Rapinoe later said that the reaction to her missed penalty was “like a sick joke.” I have never gotten it right, when I fail they are saved. That’s why I had that smile on my face.
“I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.'” Am I going to miss a penalty? I mean, honestly, I don’t remember the last time I got lost.
