Manchester United are considering bidding for a new left-back as they look to finally resolve their issues in the position, according to a report.

The move, however, would allow them to re-sign a former player who only left the club in the summer, having initially joined the youth academy but not featuring in the first team.

Alvaro Carreras, 21, joined United in September 2020 from Real Madrid, signing an off-year deal and enjoying loan spells at teams including Preston and Benfica.

There was an option to buy clause in his loan to Benfica, which the Portuguese team exercised and he moved there permanently in the summer for a reported fee of just over £5m.

According RecordHowever, United could already be ready to buy back their former player due to a buyback clause inserted into his contract when he moved to Portugal.

Carreras has been a regular for Benfica this season, making nine appearances so far this season.

His current contract with Benfica is believed to expire in 2029, although United could sign him back for around £16.7m as they try to finally resolve their issues at left-back.

The Red Devils have two left-backs on their books, although Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are currently injured, with Diogo Dalot a substitute.

Shaw is yet to play a game this season after barely playing in the Euros over the summer, while Malacia has been out for over a year but is believed to be close to returning.

Noussair Mazraoui was also signed in the summer, but has been playing as a right-back.

Meanwhile, Paul Gascoigne, has strangely called Sir Alex Ferguson return as Manchester United manager.

“I feel a bit sorry for him (Ten Hag),” Gascoigne told SportsCasting UK. “I would love for (Sir Alex) Ferguson to take over for a season and see what he can do with those players because I think some of them bother him (Ten Hag).

“You have to give the man a bit of respect and it’s such a big club. I don’t think some of the players realize who they play for.”
