A man is dead and police declared a critical incident on Tuesday following a crash in Sydney’s west that led to the closure of a major highway.

Drivers are being diverted due to the closure of the Great Western Highway in both directions at St Marys, between Glossop and Sydney streets.

A marked police car stopped near a dark gray Holden Insignia sedan parked on Mamre Road in St Marys at around 4am.

The driver of the Holden allegedly sped onto the Great Western Highway and police followed but lost sight of the car.

The Holden then collided with a silver Toyota Corolla hatchback.

The driver of the Toyota, unrelated to police activity, died at the scene.

The man has not yet been formally identified but is believed to be in his 40s.

The Holden driver allegedly fled the scene on foot.

A 43-year-old man, the alleged driver of the Holden, was arrested shortly afterwards on Chapel Street.

He was taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard for mandatory tests.

A crime scene has been established and a critical incident team from North Shore Police Area Command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is also subject to independent review.

Anyone with dashcam footage, CCTV vision or information about the incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Detours are in place and light vehicles are directed to Glossop, Brisbane and Sydney Streets in both directions.

Heavy vehicles can use Mamre Road, the M4 and the M7.
