Justin Fields returns to natural footwork with Steelers, reversing Bears changes originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
When Justin Fields First arriving in Chicago in 2021, he was accustomed to placing his right foot forward in the shotgun formation, rotating it back upon receiving the ball to prepare to shoot.
In Year 2, Luke Getsy and the Bears He taught him to place his left foot forward. This was similar to how Aaron Rodgers operated in the Green Bay pocket, easing the backtracking process.
But in the Steelers’ OTAs this offseason, it’s evident that Fields has reverted to his old footwork, throwing out the Bears’ trades.
Last season, the Bears mentioned opening the door for Fields to return to his starting footwork. He chose not to and stuck to the methods that Getsy and the Bears helped him change. He has now returned to the throwing style native to him.
This is all an effort to get Fields back to center. With the Steelers, he will start as the team’s backup behind Russell Wilson, whom the team signed along with Fields this offseason.
Fields is aware of the situation. But he won’t go to bench without a fight this off season.
“I definitely don’t have the mentality of sitting around all year,” Fields said. “I come every day to give everything I have.”
