Jurgen Klopp has named the “dummest thing” Liverpool can do after losing their lead in the title race following their 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

The Reds looked to be in cruise control after taking the lead at Old Trafford, only for Jarell Quansah to present Bruno Fernandes with a goal, before Kobbie Mainoo gave the home side the lead.

Mohamed Salah’s penalty gave Liverpool a point, but the fate of the title is no longer in their hands.

Klopp’s side now trail Arsenal on goal difference, with the Gunners holding a nine-goal advantage over the Reds.

However, the German believes it would be a mistake to focus on chasing Arsenal’s superior goal difference in the remaining seven games of the season.

He told a reporter at his post-match press conference: “You’ll do it, and other people will tell us ‘they’ve got a better goal difference, we’ve got to try.’

‘That will be the dumbest thing we can do. It doesn’t happen on purpose, you don’t win a game and you want to score eight goals and it happens.

“We are who we are, we are what we are, and that’s why we’re in the race and I absolutely agree with that.” Until yesterday we were leaders and now it’s Arsenal.”

And he added: “We want to be there after 38 (games), after the last day. It is always better to be there all the time and keep a certain distance between yourself (and the other teams).

‘We are fine with our situation. I wish we had more points but I’m absolutely fine and I’m actually delighted that these guys got us to that situation.

“The same guys who missed some opportunities are the ones who gave us 71 points.”

As is known, Liverpool were forced to take advantage of Manchester City’s superior goal advantage in the 2013-14 title race, following their 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Liverpool are now relying on Arsenal to drop points against other teams or to somehow reverse the huge goal difference advantage the Gunners currently possess.

The Reds took a 3-0 lead against Crystal Palace but continued to push for goals, allowing the Eagles to mount a famous comeback to earn the tie.

Klopp’s team would need a big change in goal difference to overtake Arsenal or expect the Gunners to drop points at the end of the season.

Manchester City are also lurking in the title race, just one point behind them in arguably the easiest matchup of the trio.
