Jennifer Connelly and Drew Barrymore discovered they once auditioned for the same role during a fun chat on Tuesday’s The Drew Barrymore Show.
Oscar winner Connelly, 53, who cut an elegant figure on her way to set in an off-the-shoulder black and white dress and white boots, sat down with the MTV Movie & TV Award winner to chat about her new series Apple+, Dark. Affair.
She plays Daniela, a woman whose husband (Joel Edgerton) is kidnapped and taken to another version of his life, while another version of himself enters her world.
The series is based on the best-selling science fiction novel by Blake Crouch, who also created the show.
During her chat with Barrymore, 49, the former child star revealed that she and Barrymore once fought for the same role in a 1984 classic.

‘Is it true that you had something to do with Firestarter? Has that project ever occurred to you? the host asked.
‘I auditioned for Firestarter. Yes it’s true. “It was like one of the first things I auditioned for,” the Phenomena star responded.
‘Yes, from the beginning. But I’m so glad I didn’t get that job because you’re so perfect at it. You were so amazing,’ she told Barrymore.
Barrymore directed the original 1984 film shortly after rising to fame for appearing in Steven Spielberg’s ET.
The film follows a young woman who discovers that she has pyrokinetic powers, or the ability to start fires, as well as the ability to see the future.
Connelly captured the hearts of Tom Cruise’s love interest Penny Benjamin in the 2022 box office hit Top Gun: Maverick.
When Barrymore said that riding on the back of a motorcycle was “the most exciting experience in life,” he explained why that wasn’t the case for him.
‘I’m going to disagree because of the gravel. I thought that what they don’t tell you is what happens with your eyes. “You’re supposed to keep your eyes open for the camera,” she explained.
“They were like he was wearing sunglasses and they were like, ‘I think it would be better if you didn’t wear sunglasses.’ I was like, ‘ok,’ and what that means is you’re trying to keep your eyes open to the camera, but you’re driving too fast,” he said.
“I guess Tom Cruise doesn’t slow down,” Barrymore said.

Connelly won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for 2001’s A Beautiful Mind. “I went there with my dad, he was my, he came with me, which was really special for me and so it tied me in a little bit,” she revealed.
The actress agreed, adding, “And I’m literally smiling and crying.” I say, “Can you see these tears?”
The presenter congratulated her for hiding her discomfort by saying: “But you were like representing what every woman felt, which is like, ‘I want to have my cheek on that shoulder and be in that container…” and you did it with such aplomb.
Connelly won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her work in 2001’s A Beautiful Mind. She played Alicia Nash in the biopic based on the life of Nobel Prize winner John Nash, who overcame his battle with schizophrenia to become a a superstar of mathematics and economics.
The memory of that night was still fresh in his mind as he described his surprise at hearing his name called as the winner.
‘Well, in my case, I think I shut down, like I panic. She was so nervous and overwhelmed. I remember looking at the audience full of extraordinary people and then seeing that it said 40 seconds and, you know, because there’s a monitor that tells you how much time you have to speak,’ she recalled.
‘And I saw it and I think I liked it, it’s a complete shock. I mean, I think the whole thing, I was kind of floating gliding over there getting there, you know, I went, I went there with my dad, he was my, he came with me, which was really special for me and so on. “He tied me up a little bit,” she revealed.
