An Australian influencer living in the UK spoke about how summer fashion differs drastically between the two countries.

Emily Brogan, who currently lives in London but is originally from Brisbane, took to her TikTok to talk about the culture shock she faced when she arrived in Britain.

Emily said people in her home country walked around wearing shorts, a crop top and even a thong and people didn’t “give a damn.”

But in London she feels that people are much more covered and even wearing sandals makes her feel “exposed”, stating that she “gets so many stares” and people “keep staring at her”.

She said: ‘Summer is coming, she’s knocking on the door and I don’t know how to dress. I’m Australian, I know how to dress for summer.

“But I’m learning that summer here, clothing-wise, is very different to summer in Australia. In Australia, I would wear anything, I would wear the shortest shorts and I wouldn’t have any problems.”

The content creator said people would wear shorts and crop tops in the UK but they would “balance it out”.

Emily said, “So if they wear ‘shorts’, they’ll pair them with a long sleeve button-up.” While she feels like no one wears shorts (bottom) and shorts (top).

“Obviously there are some people, like me, but I feel like it’s not that common and I really feel like you get a lot of stares.”

He added that he wasn’t being arrogant and insisted that people would still look at you even if you were ‘Nanny McPhee’.

Emily has lived in the capital city for a couple of years and said she didn’t have to think much about her outfit choice last summer.

This is because she had a job as a waitress and had to wear her uniform five times a week, but now she is a full-time influencer and therefore has to create her own outfits.

“I have to decide every day, it’s a first world problem, I know, but I don’t feel comfortable in crop tops and jean shorts every day of the week,” she said.

Emily added that the area she lives in isn’t the safest and deliberated on whether she should go all out and dress like she normally would or follow the London trend.

The influencer will return to Australia in September and therefore only has four months left in Britain.

One wrote: “I’ve just moved to London and the change in fashion is amazing to me.” A second said: ‘No the change is WILD and why am I questioning open toe shoes!?!’

Emily responded that she agreed and said that even in sandals she feels “exposed.”

Another added: “I was always taught that if you go short up, you go long down, and the same goes the other way around.”

A fourth commented: “I think it’s because the other 50 weeks of the year it’s really cold so they’re not used to seeing people dressed in summer.”
