A pair of Georgia parents are outraged after they say their 6-year-old daughter walked around school for several hours dressed only in a T-shirt and underwear. Avishaye Daniels says she sent her 6-year-old daughter, Aylah, to school fully clothed last Friday, but when she returned home, she was not wearing her shorts. WALB Reports.
“I felt angry, but mostly shocked,” she said.
After notifying the school, Aylah’s parents say they learned their daughter was walking around the school dressed only in a T-shirt and underwear from noon until she left around 3 p.m. “How can you take care of my 6-year-old daughter in just a T-shirt and panties, socks and shoes for three hours?” said Daman Bell, Aylah’s father.
Baker County Schools Director Jeff Henderson says the entire situation was an accident.
“This has never happened to us before,” he said.
That day, the school held a chalk party where students’ clothes got dirty. Aylah’s parents were asked to bring her a T-shirt to change into. Aylah says she forgot to put on her shorts when she was told to change. Henderson says Aylah’s teacher didn’t notice she wasn’t wearing pants.
“Her shirt was long, it came down to almost her knee and she wasn’t completely exposed or anything like that throughout the day,” Henderson said. School police and the Baker County Sheriff’s Office reviewed school cameras to make sure nothing happened to Ayla while she wasn’t wearing her pants.
Henderson says student safety was never compromised. “We care about their concerns and the safety of our students. We learned from this. It’s a great learning experience for everyone that this happened. It was never intentional, there was no way this would happen,” she said.
As Aylah’s parents wait for officers to review all the school footage, they say they will not stop voicing their concerns. While both the principal and the superintendent have apologized, they believe more should be done. Henderson told WALB He does not take this situation lightly and assures that it will not happen again.
