Elliot Page has revealed that he still gets misgendered all the time, but it’s not something he takes personally.
The 37-year-old actor came out as transgender in 2020 and is now starring in his first film role since his transition: Close To You.
Written and directed by Dominic Savage, Elliot plays Sam, a trans man reuniting with his family for the first time after his sex change.
The film shows clear parallels between Elliot’s journey and his character’s, as both eventually find acceptance in their lives.
Speaking to The Guardian about his new role, the Canadian actor addressed the issue of gender misuse.

The 37-year-old actor came out as transgender in 2020 and is now starring in his first film role since his transition: Close To You (pictured).
He said, ‘I feel weird because I get misgendered all the time, and I don’t care unless someone tries to, you know?’
There’s a moment in the film where Sam’s mother, played by Wendy Crewson, accidentally calls him by the wrong gender.
Asked if it was a slip of the tongue, Elliot replied: ‘I want to be clear: I would not correct Wendy like I do.
“I was like, ‘Okay. We’re just going to move forward from this point. Take a second.’ But, you know, I’m not me. I’m Sam here.
“And that moment was so perfect because that’s what happens.”
Speaking about the film’s similarities to her personal life, Elliot explained that her own mother sometimes makes similar mistakes, but “does the best she can.”
“She’s pretty good. I tell her, ‘Of course, it’ll take a second, Mom. It’s okay. You don’t need to beat yourself up about it!'”
Close To You is Elliot’s first television role since appearing in 2017’s Flatliners, a remake of the 1990 classic starring Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon.
Elliot, who rose to global stardom in the hit film Juno, came out as transgender and nonbinary in a powerful social media post in December 2020.

She wrote in a lengthy Instagram post: ‘I can’t begin to express how extraordinary it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.
The Hollywood star added that her “joy is real, but also fragile” due to the discrimination and violence faced by transgender people.
She continued: “I love being trans and I love being queer.”
‘And the more I embrace myself and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows, and the more I thrive.
‘To all the trans people who experience harassment, self-hatred, abuse, and threats of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.’
During her transition, she starred in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy and announced that her character would come out as trans in the third season.
The fourth and final season of the series landed on the global streaming site on August 4.
