A newly released death certificate for legendary actor Donald Sutherland says he was cremated.
Sutherland died at the age of 88 on June 20 at the University of Miami’s VITAS hospice unit, according to a copy of the official death certificate reviewed by DailyMail.com.
The cremation process took place at the Van Orsdel Crematorium in Miami, according to the document issued by the state of Florida.
The document also lists Sutherland’s widow, Francine Racette, 76, as his surviving wife and indicates his funeral will be held in Miami.
The death of the Canadian actor, who spent more than five decades in show business, was announced in a post on X/Twitter by his son, actor Kiefer Sutherland.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” Kiefer wrote in the post, which was accompanied by an old photo of the two. “I personally believe he was one of the most important actors in the history of cinema.
“He was never intimidated by any role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Sutherland amassed more than 200 television and film credits in his career, including 1970’s MASH, 1971’s Klute, 1978’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1980’s Ordinary People, 1991’s Backdraft, and several films in The Hunger Games franchise.
The late actor was well remembered by many of his peers following the news of his death.
Sutherland’s Klute co-star and former love interest Jane Fonda said on Instagram that she was “heartbroken” following the news of his passing.
“Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared with me many adventures, including the FTA Show, an anti-Vietnam War tour that he performed for 60,000 active-duty soldiers, sailors and Marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines and Japan in 1971,” Fonda said.
Elliott Gould, Sutherland’s co-star on MASH, told AP in a statement: “Donald was a giant, not just physically but as a talent, he was also enormously kind and generous.
‘It’s never easy to lose the calibre of a human being and actor like Donald Sutherland, but this hurts deeply because Donald was like a brother to me and a big part of my own career.’

The stalwart actor, who has racked up more than 200 television and film credits in his career, was photographed at the Berlin premiere of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 in November 2015.
Helen Mirren, who collaborated with Sutherland on the 2017 film The Leisure Seekers, called the late entertainer “one of the most intelligent actors I’ve ever worked with.”
He added: “He had a wonderful, inquisitive brain and a great deal of knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. He combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity and a seriousness about his acting profession. All this made him the cinema legend that he became.”
Filmmaker Ron Howard said on social media: “I was lucky enough to direct him in #Backdraft. One of the smartest, most interesting and exciting film actors of all time.”
Howard praised Sutherland’s “incredible range, creative courage and dedication to serving the story and the audience with supreme excellence.”
Sutherland, in a 2017 interview with the AP On receiving an honorary Oscar, he said he wouldn’t mind dying doing what he loved.
“I really hope that in some movie I’m doing I die, but I die, Donald, and they can use my funeral and the coffin,” Sutherland said. “That would be absolutely ideal. I’d love that.”
