Dak Prescott injured his right hamstring on Sunday and the news has only gotten worse for the Dallas Cowboys.
On Sunday, his prognosis was unclear after the game. On Monday it was reported that he would have to miss several games. On Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admitted that Prescott was likely headed to injured reserve, which would force him to miss at least four of the Cowboys’ (3-5) nine remaining games.
And on Wednesday, the question now arises as to whether Prescott will play again this season.
He Dallas Morning News reports Prescott suffered a partial avulsion of his right hamstring, an injury serious enough that team officials are trying to determine whether he needs surgery on the portion of the tendon that detached from the bone. If surgery is necessary, it will supposedly end Prescott’s season.
The quarterback is reportedly seeking second opinions on the injury before making a decision.
Prescott’s injury occurred late in the third quarter during the Cowboys’ 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. He said that after the game he “felt a pull” in his hamstring that he had never felt before and that he had trouble walking.
A serious injury to Prescott would be the biggest blow to the Cowboys’ disappointing season, although it wasn’t like the quarterback was thriving either. He has 1,978 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight games so far, with a completion percentage of 64.7 that stands as his worst mark since 2017.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys are also dealing with injuries to CeeDee Lamb (shoulder), Micah Parsons (ankle), DaRon Bland (foot) and more. They currently sit in third place in the NFC East with division matchups in three of their next four games, a very bad time to be without their starting quarterback.
Cooper Rush will replace Prescott no matter how long he is out as the Cowboys try to find some way to salvage their season. Their only deal at the trade deadline was the acquisition of wide receiver Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday.
