Country star Lainey Wilson reveals the hidden meaning behind her new hit song and talks about her marriage to boyfriend Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges

Country star Lainey Wilson has revealed the hidden meaning behind one of her lyrics while gushing about her longtime boyfriend Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges.

The 32-year-old singer-songwriter and Yellowstone actress released her latest hit, Counting Chickens, last month and left fans enthralled by its lyrics referencing getting married.

Lainey, who recently opened up about her classy response to a fan who spit on her, is dating the former Pittsburgh Steelers star, 27, and the pair made their red carpet debut last year, more than two years into their relationship.

And the country star is proving the couple is in it for the long haul, as her latest ballad is all about white dresses and saying “I do.”

Lainey even admitted that she had her lover in mind while writing the song and added that the last lyric is a nod to her boyfriend’s nickname, “Duck.”

The last line of the song is: ‘One chicken, two chickens, three chickens / Oh, boy, I think that’s a duck.’

While talking to The taste of the countrysideShe said she had played the song for her boyfriend before releasing it.

The idiom-filled ballad finds Lainey admitting that she’s putting all her eggs in one basket, but she doesn’t care.

Lainey told the outlet that the lyrics were a reference to her romance with Devlin.

She revealed that her boyfriend “loved it” and thought there should be more references to ducks.

“He said, ‘Why aren’t they ducks?’ and I said, ‘Well, I’m dating the duck, so I write about chickens,'” the country star recalled.

“He loved it because at the end of the song I say, ‘One chicken, two chickens, three chickens, oh wow, I think that’s a duck,’ and that’s just for him.”

Lainey revealed that her boyfriend was “flattered” that she wrote him a love ballad before divulging their marriage plans.

Lainey joked: “I guess I’m going to propose to her because her ass hasn’t proposed to me.”

However, she clarified that the couple is still enjoying non-marital bliss and were not ready to tie the knot.

She explained: “I think it has to be during a stage in our life where we actually have time to enjoy it. Right now I’d be like, ‘Oh shit, I’m engaged, okay, let’s move on,’ and I just want to be able to enjoy it to the fullest.”

Later in the interview, Lainey revealed that she and Miranda Lambert had become close friends, adding that she often gave her advice on how to handle life in the spotlight.

She called Miranda her “big sister of country music” and said she always called her when she needed advice.

Lainey and Delvin made their debut as a couple walking the red carpet at the 2023 Academy of Country Music Awards on May 11 at the Ford Center in Frisco, Texas.

“He’s been in the group for a while now. I decided to make him wait two and a half years,” the Things artist told Man Oughta Know a month after his public debut.

The Heart Like a Truck singer described him as a “nice guy” and said his experience as a professional athlete complements the dynamic of their relationship.

In June of last year, Lainey spoke about a concert she played in April in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, opening for Luke Combs, where she wore a Steelers jersey with her boyfriend’s name on it, sparking speculation that they were seeing each other.

“The funny thing is that literally a couple weeks before the show, we had played in Pittsburgh and my band and I were wearing Duck Hodges shirts,” he said. “And that’s what started some rumors.”

When the concert took place, fans took to social media to inform her about the fashion statement.

In a response tweet, she said: ‘Did she really do this?! You’re lying!!! @laineywilson yell at me!!!

Lainey replied, “That’s me screaming,” to which he replied, “OH. MY. GOD, hi.”
