Students at an elite private university have been banned from making elaborate “proposals” when inviting other students to their next school party.
Aquinas College, a Catholic school in Ashmore on Queensland’s Gold Coast, on Wednesday banned all “proposals” for the class of 2025.
A proposal is an often elaborate and flashy way for students to ask each other if they want to be their date to the school dance.
Aquinas College has suggested that students who post images of their proposals on social media are seeking validation rather than worrying about their date.
The private school has reportedly threatened to suspend any student who participates in a promotion since the ban was announced Wednesday.
One student said the ban was “wrong.”
“A marriage proposal was a show of respect, solidarity and compassion towards the person to whom marriage was proposed,” they told the courier mail.

Aquinas College has been operating since 1964 and currently has approximately 860 students enrolled.
Students in years nine to twelve pay more than $5,000 in tuition each year.
