‘A few days later they send me a text telling me to come to their house for something to eat at dinner time.

‘I show up and bring a small jar of chillies. One of the people who invited me says to me ‘is that all you’re going to eat?’ I felt confused and asked what they meant. They replied: “Everyone brings his own food.”

‘I told them I thought they had invited me to dinner and they said ‘yes, we invited you to come to our house for dinner!’

‘They saw my face and said ‘don’t worry, we can share some food with you!’ before cutting up a couple of raw carrots, eggplant, cherry tomatoes with a little white sauce and putting them in the center of the table.

“Then they served each other the food they had prepared themselves and began to eat.”

Many people took to the comments to share their own experiences as guests at uncomfortable dinner parties.

One person wrote: ‘People are really weird honestly. We went to a friend’s house with a bottle of wine, we all drank the wine and then when they said what else I would like to drink, I said more wine please and they said they didn’t have any and I could have pumpkin or milk. “Like I was 8 years old.”

Another said: ‘I think in most cultures it’s shameful to be stingy. OP your post is crazy!! I hope you never come back again. Or if so, bring a huge five-course meal with a cheese board and let them watch you eat it.’

Someone else wrote: ‘It’s a bit backwards here, but a friend came to stay with me for “a few days” and ended up staying two weeks. After about a week, he went shopping for bread (the first thing he ever bought) and bought my son and me a cheap loaf from the supermarket and then said we weren’t allowed any of his expensive bakery bread.

‘And I also divided a brownie on a digital scale to the gram to make sure he and my son had exactly the same amount. I was pretty offended, TBH.

A fourth said: ‘Whenever we stop by my uncles’ house, he insists we stay for dinner. He likes to serve a frozen pizza from the supermarket to share among all of us: three adults and two children. He puts extra cheese on it, so it apparently fills him up a lot.

Meanwhile, another wrote: “Being invited to Sunday lunch by friends and then delivered to the local pub and cost £10 each.”

‘We have invited the same family to ours for many meals and we have never had takeaway or expected them to pay for anything.

“I have learned now and I ask you to bring a pudding every time you come.”
