A young woman broke down in tears as she recalled the sickening moment a man harassed her and spat at her on a tram while passers-by did nothing to help her.

Erin Batchelor posted a Tik Tok about the shocking incident that occurred on a weekday afternoon in Melbourne.

Ms Batchelor revealed the man had boarded the tram before sitting no more than three metres away from her.

She said she was wary of him from the start, but didn’t want to “judge a book by its cover.”

“I was staring at him, but you could tell he was so high he was talking to himself,” Batchelor said.

‘He pulled out a bottle full of red wine and started drinking it and then he spat it on the floor and made all these noises.’

She said the man approached her and tried to grab her phone, which she was holding tightly.

She remembered that she looked at him but didn’t say anything because she was afraid.

Ms Batchelor said the man sat in the seat opposite her and when she tried to move he put his leg out to block her.

She explained how she stepped over him and walked to the back of the tram with two other terrified female passengers, only for the man to follow them before tackling another woman.

“He started talking very aggressively and swearing, and that’s when I started shaking and trying to stay calm,” Batchelor said.

She said the man followed her as she got off the tram before an even more shocking incident occurred.

“He spat on me and I felt very disgusted,” she said.

The other woman had also gotten off the tram and offered her napkins and wet wipes to clean herself.

However, he said there were many other people on board who did not offer any help.

“There were all these men sitting there doing nothing, which is also very frustrating, especially seeing a young woman like myself and another young woman feeling so uncomfortable,” Batchelor said.

Ms Batchelor said the ordeal left her feeling “helpless”.

“You have no idea what this person could do, and people around you are either scared or not helping you at all,” she said.

‘I don’t understand why people don’t try to help people if they can.

“It’s so frustrating when these things happen, and especially when women don’t feel safe, and it happens literally on a random Wednesday at two in the afternoon, in broad daylight, with so many people around.”

Ms Batchelor ended her video by saying the incident could have been worse.

“I’m just sharing my frustrations and raising awareness about the need to be alert and aware of their surroundings,” he said.

Victoria Police told Daily Mail Australia the incident had not been reported.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Ms Batchelor and Yarra Trams for comment.
