Borussia Dortmund advanced to the Champions League final by beating PSG

Borussia Dortmund secured their place in the Champions League final by beating Paris Saint-Germain.

Dortmund already had a one-goal lead from the first leg and extended it thanks to Mats Hummels in the 50th minute on Tuesday night.

Despite intense pressure from PSG, Dortmund held on and won 2-0 on aggregate.

Edin Terzic’s team will now face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the final at Wembley on June 1.

Mail Sport’s Pete Jenson assesses the performance of both groups of players.

Borussia Dortmund advanced to the Champions League final by beating PSG

PARIS SAINT GERMAIN (4-2-3-1)

Gianluigi Donnarumma – 5

Great early save against Adeyemi. But so inconsequential in the corners considering his size, and that cost PSG once again.

Achraf Hakimi – 5.5

Good early forays down the right, but never with a final ball to match. He dived late to take a penalty when PSG became desperate. Guilty of trying to select Mbappé in the last minutes instead of looking for the goal himself.

Marquinhos – 6

He moved the ball quickly forward. A deflected header after a good delivery from Kang-In Lee went wide. He tried to hold PSG’s unconvincing defense together.

Lucas Beraldo – 5

He played in place of the injured Luis Hernández and completely lost Hummels in goal. The position remains a weakness for the French champions.

Achraf Hakimi should have gone on goal himself later instead of trying to find Mbappé

Nuño Mendes – 7

He won the first one-on-one duel with Sancho. PSG’s best defender and he also advanced well.

Warren Zaire-Emery – 6

He lacked conviction when he hit the post at the start of the second half from a tight angle. So young and so promising, his chance to reach a Champions League final will come again.

Vitinha – 7.5

PSG’s best player. Hits the frame of the goal late. He led Luis Enrique’s team forward and did not deserve to be on the losing side.

Fabian Ruiz – 5

He gave the ball away on the first pass and that set the tone for his performance. It was no surprise when he was replaced early in the second half.

Ousmane Dembélé – 7

Always willing to run at the Dortmund defense and almost won a penalty, but nothing went his way. I was lucky to escape a booking for an early foul on Maatsen, eventually booked in the second half.

Gonçalo Ramos – 4.5

He leaned back and shot after Vitinha set him up perfectly on the hour. Terrible mistake at the worst moment right after Dortmund’s goal. Moments later he did the same again with his last kick before being taken out.

Kylian Mbappé frequently controlled the ball poorly in the first half, but hit the crossbar at the end.

Kylian Mbappé – 6

Controlled the ball poorly too often in the first half. He selflessly encouraged Dembélé before the break, but became even more desperate after the break. He reaches the top of the bar later. PSG needed him to put in a five-star performance. This was not all. A sad au revoir.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND (4-2-3-1)

Gregory Kobel – 6

He stopped Mbappé’s first shot without going over. Safe hands on set pieces. The goal frame saved him when he was overwhelmed.

Julian Ryerson – 7

Early shot to the side of the net. Overall, he handled Mbappe’s threat well and made a key clearance early in the first half.

Mats Hummels – 8.5

The only survivor of Dortmund’s starting XI from the last time they were in the final and what a performance to get there again. He took the goal well from him. He always plays; he always class. The second half foul on Demble was also clever, just inches from the box.

Nico Schlotterbeck – 7

He never panicked alongside Hummels and with Sule as support too, as Dortmund went five behind at the end.

Ian Maatsen – 7.5

He carries the ball forward from the wing with a mix of grace and threat. He also defended himself well. From Chelsea’s reserve to the Champions League final.

Emre can – 6.5

He kept it simple and held everything together against the Dortmund defense. He played the role of him in the yellow wall that kept PSG away.

Marcel Sabitzer – 6

Booked for a foul in the second half to prevent Barcola from clearing. Like Can, he must take great credit for Dortmund’s defensive record.

Karim Adeyemi – 6.5

He had Dortmund’s first shot, well saved by Donnarumma but without real impact and substituted early in the second half.

Julian Brandt – 6.5

Great kick for the corner that gave Dortmund the lead that night. I found space and made the most of it. Always a threat when PSG committed forward.

Jadon Sancho – 6.5

Some good diagonals in the first half. He didn’t have the same impact as the first leg, but he worked hard on the ball at all times.

Niclas Fullkrug – 6

Early shot to the side of the net and a lot of strong running.
