A star University of Oregon football player was arrested after allegedly killing a 46-year-old man in a horrific hit-and-run.
Daylen Amir Austin, 19, was charged with felony hit-and-run Monday night, before police revealed disturbing details about the incident.
Reported dispatch records found that police were initially called to a stabbing at 9:15 p.m. about 3 miles from the university campus, and that the victim was found in the road with a large laceration to his neck.
A hammer was also reportedly found near the victim, who has not been identified, and police said their “complex” investigation is still ongoing.
Daylen Amir Austin, 19, a star defensive back at the University of Oregon, was charged with felony hit-and-run.
The 911 caller who reported the incident to police described it as a stabbing and the victim was found with a laceration to her neck. A hammer was also found nearby, as police described the situation as “complex.”
Just over two hours after the hit-and-run, Austin was arrested at an apartment around 11:45 p.m.
Investigators have not yet explained why the 911 caller reporting the incident described it as a stabbing, only saying that the situation is “complex.”
Austin, a sophomore defensive back, was arraigned at the Lane County Jail on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old did not enter a plea at his arraignment and was granted probation by Circuit Court Judge Kamala Shugar, reports The Oregonian.
Authorities say they are still investigating evidence gathering in the death, and the Lane County District Attorney’s Office will make a final charging decision.
In a statement following the charges being filed, the Oregon football program said it was “aware of the incident.”
The team had no further comment as it says it is “awaiting additional information.”
Before the accident, neighbors said KEZI that they heard a vehicle driving noisily through their neighborhood.
“Around nine to 10, I drove a car driving through the neighborhood up and down what sounded like Polk and then up and down Fourth, and then it sounded like it was behind us,” said neighbor Seth Lockard.
“It sounded like he was going in circles for about 10 to 15 minutes, very fast.”
Austin was arrested at an apartment approximately two hours after allegedly fleeing the scene.
Locals said their street is notorious for speeders seeking to avoid a nearby main road, and neighbor Anthony Sharpy said blood was left at the scene for hours after the crash.
“The next morning when I walked by there were still pools of blood and some gloves on the street, so I put some hydrogen peroxide on the blood and put 5-gallon buckets of water to try to wash it off because people “They pass their dogs right there, there are flies and birds flying around,” he said.
“We just didn’t want to see the blood in the street.”
