Luka Modric went from zero to hero in 32 seconds in Croatia’s crucial Group B clash against Italy at Euro 2024.

After a goalless first half, Croatia were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute after a handball by Davide Frattesi, and the 38-year-old veteran stepped up to put his team ahead.

But his shot was weak and easily parried away by Gianluigi Donnarumma, leaving Modric devastated. Although he could hardly have made peace quicker.

Croatia regained possession and mounted another attack, with Donnarumma making another great save to deny Ante Budimir. However, his save fell at the feet of Modric, who this time did not miss.

His goal sparked wild celebrations in front of jubilant Croatian fans, as Modric collapsed to the ground and was mobbed by his teammates after a notable passage of play.

Modric’s goal earned him a place in Euro Cup history, as he became the oldest goalscorer in the tournament’s history.

He should turn 39 in September and Euro 2024 is expected to be his last major tournament.

The midfielder expected to come out strong, since he finished second and third, respectively, in the last two World Cups.

But Croatia had a poor start to the tournament, losing 3-0 to Spain before drawing 2-2 against Albania.

Heading into Tuesday’s match, they knew they needed to beat Italy to overcome their Group B opponents and secure a place in the round of 16.

Modric may have ensured that his tournament is not over yet by maintaining his composure immediately after experiencing the worst moment of missing a penalty on the biggest stage.
