Twisters made a splash at the box office over the weekend, grossing an estimated $80.5 million in its debut.
The action-adventure starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos opened in more than 4,100 theaters across the United States, according to TheNumbers.com.
Earnings have exceeded expectations, grossing $30 million more than anticipated, resulting in the biggest opening for a live-action film this summer so far.
“We had high aspirations from the beginning, and it certainly exceeded them,” Jim Orr, who heads distribution for Universal Studios, told ABC News.
“We’re seriously over-indexing between coasts, which is also fun to watch.”

The blockbuster has already opened in some international markets and grossed $574.4 million worldwide, far exceeding the film’s $155 million budget.
The film received a lukewarm 78 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences were excited about the grand adventure centered on a compelling team of storm chasers.
Although the project did not feature the returning characters from 1996’s Twister, starring Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton, box office returns seemed to reflect audience affection for the now-classic film.
Twisters’ position at the top of the box office may not last long. Next Friday, the film will face stiff competition with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine.

The animated films, Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2, continued to do well at the box office.
Despicable Me 4, starring the voices of Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig, fell to second place after two weeks at the top, grossing $23.8 million.
Inside Out 2 remained in third place with earnings of $12.8 million.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die landed at number seven in its seventh week in theaters with a $2.67 million take. Global earnings for the latest film in the popular franchise now total $388 million.
MaXXXine continued to draw fans to theaters. The bloody horror film starring Mia Got, a murderous Hollywood star, grossed $819,242 over the weekend and came in eighth place.
Bikeriders came in at ninth place with approximately $700,000 and rounding out the top ten with $685,000 was Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1.
