Curved-toe heels, chunky necklaces, and oversized sunglasses are among the best fashion pieces that make you look older than you are.
Gone are the days when you got away with wearing vintage jewelry, skinny jeans, or extravagant flowers. While you may think these styles are timeless, unfortunately that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Confused? Don’t worry, there is hope. Stylist sara bell reveals the simple changes you can make today to update your wardrobe and avoid an embarrassing faux pas.
“When it comes to styles that can make you look older, fashion basics associated with particular eras, especially when overused, are the worst offenders.‘Sarah tells me.
“While incorporating vintage pieces here and there along with modern elements can work, a full set from these eras will give you a more aged look.”
She stresses that it’s essential to have a wardrobe that complements not only your age, but also your personality, lifestyle, body shape, and color palette.
‘Once you have that base, you can selectively and safely introduce vintage elements into your look. That said, I firmly believe that wearing clothing and accessories with confidence can make almost any look work with the right combination.”

Curved toe heels
When it comes to choosing shoes, Sarah recommends avoiding smaller heels with “full toe coverage” at all costs because this style can make your feet and legs “look wider.”
“While they can create a classic and glamorous look when styled correctly, they are often associated with an older age group,” she says.
Instead, opt for slingback heels that show some of your foot and have a small strap for support.
“They offer a lengthening effect and are versatile for all seasons and ages.”

Tousled Floral Dresses
Old-fashioned floral dresses for spring can add years to your look, and many consider them old-fashioned.
Sarah says modern cuts and subtle patterns generally offer a more youthful and elegant appeal.
“A versatile option would be a midi-length dress with a waist to define the shape and a V-neckline or a V-neckline to elongate the body, providing a balanced and flattering summer look.”
Outdated floral dresses for spring, like the one seen on the left, are certainly not groundbreaking and can add years to your look. Sarah says modern cuts and subtle patterns (example shown right) generally offer a more youthful, elegant appeal.
Avoid: oversized sunglasses
Oversized sunglasses
While big, bold sunglasses are often practical, the style often looks dated and can make you look years older.
“They often overshadow more sophisticated and timeless designs, giving a more exaggerated and theatrical effect,” explains Sarah.
“While they may look modern and eye-catching, their overwhelming effect can detract from a youthful and sophisticated look.”
Instead, opt for sleek styles like cat-eye sunglasses or classic basics that can elevate your look without compromising elegance.
Lockable Shoulder Bags
When it comes to choosing a bag, a “flap bag” tends to be more versatile and fashionable than alternative options.
However, one style you should stay away from is zippered bags and purses.
‘The Lock Shoulder Bag is a timeless accessory that continues to evolve and offers security with its centered latch and structured frame. However, it can sometimes have a vintage feel due to its classic design,” Sarah tells me.
“In contrast, the flap bag, available in multiple sizes and materials, offers a versatile, durable style with its classic flap detail and adjustable strap options.”

While adding a necklace can enhance an outfit or balance your body shape, a chunky chain necklace often seems more suited to older women because of its boldness (left). Conversely, a thin, delicate necklace offers a subtle touch (right)
Chunky necklaces
While adding a necklace can enhance an outfit or balance your body shape, a chunky chain necklace often seems more suited to older women because of its boldness.
On the other hand, a thin, delicate necklace offers a subtle touch that adds just the right amount of elegance without overwhelming the look.
