INDIANAPOLIS – Scott McLaughlin will start from the pole position of the No. 108 Indy 500 starting lineup as Team Penske completes its first sweep of the front row in 36 years.

McLaughlin will take the green flag alongside teammates Will Power and Josef Newgarden.

Team Penske, which has a record of 19 Indianapolis 500 victories, swept the front row in qualifying for the 1988 race with Rick Mears, Al Unser and Danny Sullivan.

Team Penske extended its Indy 500 pole record to 19 with its first No. 1 qualifying finish at the Brickyard since Simon Pagenaud in 2019.

McLaughlin, whose previous best qualifying position in three Indy 500 starts was 14th last year, posted the fastest four-lap average (234.220 mph) to the pole position in Indy 500 history, breaking the average of 234.217 mph. by Alex Palou last year.

Other notables:

—Kyle Larson, who will try to become the fifth driver to compete in the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, will start fifth in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion’s Indy 500 debut.

—Felix Rosenqvist will start ninth as the highest-qualified Honda after Chevrolet swept the top seven spots.

—Among solo drivers, two-time Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato qualified 10th, Ryan Hunter-Reay was 12th and Katherine Legge was 31st.

—Helio Castroneves, 49, is the oldest and most experienced (23 Indy 500 starts) in the field. Rookie Kyffin Simpson, 19, is the youngest.
