Just after winning the Masters for the second time, world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler paid tribute to his wife, Meredith.
Meredith Scheffler was unable to travel to Augusta National because she is expecting her and Scottie’s first child in the coming days.
Just after leaving the 18th green and entering Butler Cabin for the on-air green jacket ceremony, Scheffler was asked if he had anything to say to his wife at home.
“I’m coming home,” he said. ‘I’m coming home as fast as I can. Yes, I love you and I’m coming home. That’s all.’
When questioned further, he joked: “You’re going to make me cry.”
Scottie Scheffler paid tribute to his wife during the green jacket ceremony on Sunday.
Scheffler was prepared to quit the tournament, even if he was in the lead, if his wife Meredith (seen here at The Players Championship just a few weeks ago) went into labor.
That didn’t happen and Scheffler earned his second green jacket on Sunday night.
“It’s a very, very special moment for both of us. I can’t really put into words what it means to win this tournament again, I can’t really put into words what it will be like to be a father for the first time.
“So I’m really looking forward to getting home and celebrating with Meredith, it’s been a long week here without her.”
Speaking publicly again at the official ceremony, Scheffler repeated the sentiment in a speech.
‘I love you darling, I’m excited for the next few weeks. I’m excited to get home. I miss you and I love you, and I’ll be home soon.’
Scheffler was potentially waiting for news of Meredith going into labor and made it clear that he would withdraw from the tournament if she, in fact, went into labor.
Fortunately for Scottie, that didn’t happen and he claimed the $3.6 million prize for winning the tournament and, of course, the illustrious green jacket.
