The star has been a judge on the cooking competition since replacing Mary in 2016.

However, this almost didn’t happen, as Prue reveals that she initially dismissed the idea entirely.

It was revealed that the women had known each other since the 1970s when a photo of them with broadcaster Jack de Manio (1914-1988) was discovered.

Prue told the Podcast Sliding Doors With Jennie Becker: ‘I took the plunge. I had started thinking about it once I knew Mary Berry wasn’t going to continue. I thought, “Oh, I’d love that job,” but I dismissed the idea.

‘If you think about my past career, I spent 11 years sitting on the Great British Menu as a judge and each dish has about ten flavours, which makes Bake Off seem really simple.

‘In the case of cake, with just one spoonful you can get the topping, the filling and the crumb. I knew all the great chefs, I had my own Michelin-starred restaurant, so I knew that level of cooking very well.’

The connection with baking specialist Maty extends to Prue’s own husband, fashion designer John Playfair, 77, who frequently uses her to his advantage when commenting on his wife’s cooking.

“I don’t bake cakes because we’re both too fat, so he teases me, saying, ‘I wish I’d married Mary Berry,'” she said.

Upon Prue’s arrival, she was not welcomed by fans, already unhappy over the BBC’s move to Channel 4 and the loss of Mary, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc.

Prue said The times In February: “Oh, I hate my voice. It’s too posh. When I replaced Mary Berry in Bake Off, someone in Twitter She said, “Oh no, not that fancy bitch,” and I agreed with her. But yes, Americans seem to like her.
