Prominent engineer and father of two Greg Saenger, who worked on major government construction projects in New South Wales, was found dead on the beach at South Ballina

The body of a respected engineer and father of two young children has been found dead on a popular beach after being reported missing days earlier.

Greg Saenger, 45, of Byron Bay, was last seen on River Street in Ballina, in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, at about 7.30pm on Monday.

Four days later, police were called to South Ballina Beach after a body was discovered in the water at around 6.30pm on Friday.

Although the body has not yet been formally identified, it is believed to be that of Mr. Saenger, the The Telegraph newspaper information.

The father of two is regarded as one of New South Wales’ top geotechnical engineers and is the director and principal engineer of his company Civil Construct.

Lismore City Council has contracted Civil Construct to carry out seven civil engineering construction projects following the devastating floods of 2017.

Mr Saenger, who has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, was a senior representative on the Tintenbar to Ewingsdale upgrade of the Pacific Highway in northern New South Wales.

His company was contracted to build a new bridge over the Clarence River at Harwood as part of the larger Woolgoolga to Ballina (W2B) project.

Mr Saenger is one of New South Wales’ leading geotechnical engineers and has overseen a variety of major infrastructure projects throughout his 20-year career.

In his profile on the Civil Construct website, Mr. Saenger is said to enjoy working on large infrastructure projects most about engineering.

“He is passionate about temporary workspaces, where design can be done on the spot. But above all, he gets great satisfaction from being able to help his clients with innovative engineering solutions,” reads his profile.

‘When Greg isn’t working, you’ll find him surfing, swimming in the ocean, or teaching his kids to surf and skate.’

Saenger’s death comes just a few years after his father, Peter Saenger, a professor of coastal management in Lismore, died unexpectedly in 2021.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
