Princess Mary of Denmark says she and Prince Joachim were “not happy” with the way their children were stripped of their princely titles, following a shocking decision by Queen Margaret two years ago, a new interview has revealed.

“We weren’t happy with the way it happened,” Marie, 48, admitted. ‘But it’s a family thing. It’s complicated.’

The prince’s wife, who he shares with Count Henrik, 14, and Countess Athena, 12, said her name is not just a trivial matter.

But there appears to be no hard feelings in the family, as a smiling Joachim, 54, was pictured hugging his brother, the newly crowned King Frederick X, after their mother’s abdication in January.

“We have moved on,” added the Prince.

While the dust appears to have settled, after the family was stripped of their titles in September 2022, Joachim had claimed that his mother’s decision had initially “harmed” her children.

Months later, the sixth in line to the throne admitted there was a “lack of communication” within the Royal Family in the run-up to the shock announcement.

Joachim told a local media outlet. B.T.: ‘There is a lot to work on. What was missing was communication. Now we have found each other and we are on the right path.’

He added that he had only been given five days’ notice before the news was made public.

Following the Queen’s announcement, Joachim spoke to a Danish publication Ekstra Bladet outside the Danish embassy in Paris, where he lived with his French wife, Princess Mary, and their two youngest children, and said his four children had been “hurt” by their grandmother’s decision.

“They gave me five days notice to tell them. In May, they presented me with a plan that, in general, was that when each of the children turned 25, it would happen. Now I only had five days to tell him. Athena will be 11 years old in January,’ she clarified at the time.

speaking to B.T.Joachim and his second wife, Maria, also admitted that their relationship with Prince Frederick and Princess Mary is “complicated.”

Meanwhile, Alexandra, Prince Joachim’s ex-wife, said her sons Nikolai, 24, and Felix, 21, felt “excluded” from the institution and that the decision came as a “bolt of the blue.”

The Royal Family issued an additional statement stating that “the decision has been a long time coming.”

“We understand that there are many emotions at play at this time, but we hope that the Queen’s wish to prepare the Royal Household for the future will be respected,” the statement added.

None of Joachim’s children, nor his wife, Princess Mary, joined him in Frederick’s ascension.

Instead, Marie and her two children remained in Washington, DC, where the family now lives.

A palace spokesman said Hello!: “Prince Joachim will be there, but the children are going to school, there is no special reason.”

However, there appear to be no hard feelings from her eldest son, Nikolai, who posted sweet photos with his uncle and grandmother on his Instagram account.

The student, who is currently studying in Sydney and holidaying in Bali, added that he was eating Danish food, perhaps as a sign that he was missing home.

After the parliamentary reception, most of the royals headed to a reception in parliament, however Joachim left to fly back to the United States.

Once inside parliament, the family listened to speeches by Danish politicians, including the Prime Minister, before the Danish national girls’ choir sang Hans Christian Andersen’s “Denmark, My Homeland,” which brought Maria to tears.

Braving -2°C (28°F) temperatures and rainy weather, Mary and Frederik greeted their family outside the building before watching the politicians’ speeches.

After entering parliament, Mary, with a bouquet in hand, made her way to the chamber with her husband Frederik and son Christian sitting on either side of her.

Joachim, Benedikte and Margarethe sat in the back as they listened to the speech by Mette Frederiksen, the Danish Prime Minister.
