Phillip Schofield has confirmed the death of his mother Pat, weeks after returning to mainstream television with a new Channel 5 show.

Phillip Schofield has confirmed that his beloved mother Pat has died aged 88.

The heartbroken former This Morning presenter revealed he “held her, loved her and held her” during her final days before she passed away this afternoon.

Schofield, 62, broke the news to her fans on her Instagram account tonight that her “magnificent mother” had died after a “heartbreaking weekend.”

He shared a photo of himself smiling as he lovingly placed his arm around Pat’s shoulders and wrote: “For three days we held her, loved her, held her and said everything that needed to be said.

‘She was calm, peaceful, beautiful and dignified. “I will always be proud and privileged that she was my mother.”

Schofield gave his “eternal gratitude” to the paramedics, Treliske A&E in Truro, Cornwall, and the intensive care team who have been “with my mother and our angels in the past and this weekend.”

She signed the post with a broken heart emoji along with the words: “I love you mom, forever.”

Pat’s death comes sixteen years after Schofield’s father, Brian, died aged 72 in 2008 after suffering a heart attack.

In October, the presenter made a timid return to the spotlight for the Channel 5 program Náufrago, during which he defended himself on a remote island for ten days.

The three-part show was Schofield’s first TV job since losing his lucrative role on ITV and This Morning following an affair with a young colleague.

On Instagram, Schofield wrote: “Today at 3pm and after a heartbreaking weekend, my magnificent mother decided to go with her beloved Brian.”

Last year, Schofield held a vigil at her mother’s bedside in the hospital after she fell seriously ill.

At the time she was treated for an unknown condition in a Cornwall hospital for several days.

Pat returned home, where Schofield lovingly cared for her and stayed with her at his home in Newquay while she recovered.
