A newborn baby girl with her umbilical cord still attached was found dead outside a New York City apartment.
Police were called to the backyard of 1150 St. Lawrence Ave in the Bronx around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday after a construction worker made the gruesome discovery.
The baby was unconscious and unresponsive with the umbilical cord still attached. After attempting to render aid, EMS pronounced the girl dead at the scene.
The medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death and the police investigation remains ongoing. No arrests have been made.
She was discovered by the building superintendent and a contractor who were in the alley to work on waterproofing.

‘There were bees and flies around the baby. We called 911 and then the officers came. It was heartbreaking. I have never felt this pain in my life,” said contractor Ali Saadat. PIX11.
The building superintendent named Carlos said he wishes he had realized this sooner.
‘I was crazy because they say the baby was there for almost three or four days and the baby was next to my living room. “I literally could have looked out the window and seen the baby,” she said. WABC.
Law enforcement sources told the local news station they believe a teenage girl who was hiding her pregnancy gave birth in the building and then threw the newborn in the back.
The New York State Abandoned Infant Protection Law allows a parent to abandon a newborn baby up to 30 days old anonymously and without fear of prosecution, if the baby is safely abandoned.
A hospital, a staffed police station, or a fire station are examples of safe and appropriate options, according to the law.

Monica Kelsey, founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, said in a social media post Monday that hospital staff responded within a minute to an alarm indicating a baby was in the box.
The baby was wrapped in a blanket and the placenta was still attached, Kelsey said.
The organization and hospital staff are working with police investigators to determine what happened.
