John Farnham is publishing his own candid memoir titled The Voice Inside, and the announcement comes more than a year after his surgery for oral cancer.

Co-written with Poppy Stockwell, the 74-year-old Australian music legend will tell his personal and public journey in his own words and with his trademark humour.

The book will document Farnham’s early life and stardom while growing up in Melbourne in the 1960s, through to his 1986 comeback album, Whispering Jack.

It will also chronicle the highs and lows of his fame, as well as the lows: when his stellar career stalled, record companies turned their backs on him, and he faced financial ruin.

More recently, Farnham will reflect on his mouth cancer diagnosis in 2022, which came just months after the death of his friend and manager Glenn Wheatley.

The memoir, published by Hachette Australia, will be released in all formats in November 2024.

“After being asked many times, I finally felt it was the right time to sit down and tell my story,” Farnham said.

‘It’s a very strange feeling to look back on my life, the good and the bad, and now that I’ve started it’s all coming back quickly.

“I hope the book engages and entertains, because that’s what much of my life has been about.”

Meanwhile, Stockwell added: “Working with John on his memoir has been like sitting down with an old friend, who is also an absolute legend, to share stories that are both deeply personal and wildly entertaining.

‘His resilience and sense of humor shine through in every memory, making this project a genuine reflection of the man behind the music. “It has been a pleasure helping to bring his tales to life and I can’t wait for readers to get unlimited glimpses of the man whose music is the soundtrack to so many of our lives.”

Following his diagnosis in 2022 and subsequent surgery, Farnham remains cancer-free.

The You’re the Voice hitmaker announced he was cancer-free in August the following year.

In his first personal statement since the surgery, the music superstar said he was finally in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family and felt like “the luckiest man I know.”

“It’s been a year since my first surgery and, to be honest, I’ve lost count of how many other procedures have been done since then,” he said.

I’m sure someone has followed them all…let’s just say there have been a few.

‘But now I am home and I am a very grateful and happy man. I’m sitting here in my living room enjoying the attention of my beautiful wife, Jill, my sons Rob and James, and my mini Schnauzer, Edmund.

Farnham went on to thank his fans for their well wishes and support and said he was looking forward to his first celebratory meal: a pizza.

Farnham’s family had previously provided updates on behalf of the Australian music legend.
