SEAT PLEASANT, Md. – A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot in the neck, allegedly by her own mother, during a heated domestic dispute Monday night. The incident occurred at a residence near the Seat Pleasant Police Department in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
Authorities arrested Talecka Brown, 32, charging her with attempted first-degree murder after surveillance footage and additional investigation pointed to her involvement in the shooting.
Police were called to the scene on 69th Place, where they found the young woman near the front door with a gunshot wound. Initially, the girl claimed her mother ordered her to say someone else had shot her. However, investigators quickly discovered the truth.
Surveillance video captured the teen walking home from school, grabbing a trash can from the sidewalk and entering the home. According to court documentsNo one else was seen entering or leaving the house between the time the girl entered and the shooting.
The girl later told investigators that she and her mother had been arguing when the altercation escalated. As he walked down the stairs, he noticed his mother holding a gun. Moments later, a single shot was fired, causing her to fall to the bottom of the stairs, she said. fox5dc.
“It is always tragic when we have acts of violence within our community, but heartbreaking when the perpetrator is supposed to be your protector,” Seat Pleasant’s interim police chief said in a statement.
Neighbor Tina Niblack, who witnessed Brown’s arrest, expressed shock and sadness. “It’s disheartening that so much of this is happening today,” he said. “Domestic violence in any form, even within your own home, is still domestic violence.”
The young woman is currently receiving treatment in hospital, where she is expected to undergo further surgeries as her condition stabilizes. During a search, a loaded black Glock pistol was recovered from the home.
Talecka Brown remains in custody and is scheduled for a bond hearing tomorrow at 1:15 pm, as the community grapples with the shocking domestic violence incident.
