Detectives have charged a man following the death of a woman who was stabbed in Far North Queensland in what they allege was a family violence incident.
Emergency crews were called to Mighell, south of Innisfail, at around 4.15pm on Friday after the woman, 51, ran from her car to a nearby house for help.
She later died from a fatal stab wound and police confirmed on Saturday that they had charged a 51-year-old man with her murder.
Police said Saturday that the two knew each other before the incident and that there are “ongoing investigations to determine what other crimes the man allegedly committed after leaving the scene.”
It is understood the man fled the area in the woman’s car and then crashed into a truck shortly afterwards on the Bruce Highway at Sandy Pocket.
The truck driver was unhurt.
It is then presumed that the man also tried to steal another car.
Residents were urged to avoid the area while officers assessed the situation and the road was closed until Friday evening.
Police at the scene in Mighell, south of Innisfail, where a woman was stabbed on Friday.
Police said Friday that there are “no further threats to public safety.”
The man has been charged with one count of murder (domestic violence offence) and is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on July 1.
