Foppen Seafood's 'smoked Norwegian salmon slices' have been removed from some supermarkets

A massive recall has been issued on salmon slices sold at Kroger and Payless grocery stores in fifteen states over fears they may be contaminated with listeria.

The company has recalled Foppen Seafood’s ‘Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices’ from some supermarkets after Listeria monocytogenes was found in its batch during routine testing.

The bacteria can cause listeriosis which can be fatal for the elderly, young children and immunocompromised people.

The voluntary recall notice was published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday.

The potentially infected items are toast-sized slices of salmon sold in 8.1-ounce packages with the lot number ‘412’ and UPC code ‘8 40137 10000 2.’

The products were sold at Payless and Kroger supermarkets in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia, according to the FDA.

Buyers who have purchased the salmon slices are advised not to eat them, but to throw them away or return them for a refund.

The symptoms of listeriosis can last from days to several weeks and vary depending on the severity of the disease.

Some people with minor symptoms may experience fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, according to the FDA advisory.

If the infection is more severe, patients may experience headache, neck stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures.

Any consumer who has consumed the product and is experiencing symptoms is urged to seek medical attention.

It is not yet clear if anyone has become ill as a result of eating salmon.

Food watchdogs also recalled more than 70 ice cream brands this week after testing revealed they could be contaminated with listeria.

Following the discovery, Maryland-based Totally Cool stopped producing and distributing all of its ice cream products.

Affected treats include Friendly’s ice cream cakes, Hershey’s ice cream cones and Jeni’s sandwiches.
