Married At First Sight expert Mel Schilling has posted an update on her battle with cancer, admitting she feels “tired” but is “doing fine”.

The Australian human behavior specialist, 52, was diagnosed with colon cancer just before Christmas.

Speaking on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden on Monday, Mel explained how she felt.

Mel said that although she was tired, she was “doing well” and revealed she had a week off from chemotherapy, which gave her energy.

The reality TV host also said the type of chemo she’s receiving doesn’t make her sick or cause her to lose her hair, but it has given her “tingling fingers.”

Jamie said: “On the subject of speaking honestly, you shared with your fans last year that you had been diagnosed with cancer.

“You have been very honest and open about this. First of all, how are you?

“Thank you,” Mel replied. ‘I’m doing well. So it’s currently an off week in my chemo cycles, which is why I have a lot of energy today. I’m doing well. THANKS.’

Jamie asked: “How are you finding chemo because I remember my mom going through it and being tough.”

Mel said: “I learned that there are many different types of chemo…so the type of chemo I get doesn’t really make me sick. This won’t make me lose my hair.

“I have other side effects like tingling in my fingers, it’s funny and very sensitive to the cold. So I often have to wear gloves. And just a little tired.

Mel confirmed the MAFS UK team were “in full preparation” for filming the new series – which she described as “fabulous”.

You know, something I’ll tell you about the new British season is that it’s a very different group of people,” Mel said.

“This is probably not the group of people you would expect to see on Married at First Sight or even any reality TV show.

“He’s a different type of person. And I think a lot of our audience is going to find that very relevant. I think you’re going to see things a little differently for the next British season.

It comes after Mel opened up about the agony she went through before her cancer diagnosis.

Speak again! magazine last month, Mel recalled the intense pain she felt at work, saying: “I was doubled over and screaming – the pain was so intense.”

Her doctors initially thought her symptoms were simply constipation, but she quickly became concerned after losing her appetite.

During a trip to Ireland with her husband Gareth, Mel said she was in “so much pain” and struggled to keep down food or water.

Knowing something was still wrong, she went to see a gastroenterologist after returning to London, who was “concerned” about her unexplained weight loss.

Mel had a scan and returned a few days later to get her results, remembering the heartbreaking moment she was told she had cancer.

She said: “We were sitting in his office and the doctor had a blank look and I thought, ‘That doesn’t look good,’ and he said, ‘It’s cancer.’ I think I was numb, didn’t process it and went into work mode, that’s all I could focus on.

The reality TV host revealed her health shock in December and underwent colon surgery just before the end of the year.

She explained that her tumor – which she named “Terry” – was removed by British doctors.

However, as the cancer spread through her colon to the muscle, Mel discovered she needed chemotherapy and began treatment in late February.

In December, she updated her followers about her surgery to remove her tumor.

During a trip to Ireland with her husband Gareth, Mel said she was in “so much pain” and struggled to keep down food or water.

“So yesterday lunchtime I had keyhole surgery to remove my tumor (aka Terry) and in the words of my amazing surgeon, it couldn’t have gone better!” Mel said at the time.

The post accompanied a photo of the TV star in a hospital bed, giving a thumbs up with a tube in her nose.

She added: “Importantly, the cancer did not spread to my abdominal cavity, which was our biggest fear but was entirely located in my colon.

“Over the next few days I will discuss my treatment plan moving forward, but I will just say that Terry is toast! »

COLON CANCER: WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS?

Bowel, or colorectal, cancer affects the large intestine, made up of the colon and rectum.

These tumors usually develop from precancerous tumors, called polyps.

Symptoms include:

  • Bleeding from the bottom
  • Blood in stool
  • A change in bowel habits lasting at least three weeks
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme and unexplained fatigue
  • Abdominal pain

Most cases have no clear cause, but people are more at risk if:

  • are over 50 years old
  • Have a family history of the disease
  • have a personal history of polyps in the intestine
  • Suffer from an inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease
  • Leading an unhealthy lifestyle

Treatment usually involves surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

More than nine in ten people with stage 1 bowel cancer survive five years or more after their diagnosis.

Unfortunately, only about a third of all colorectal cancers are diagnosed at this early stage.

The majority of people visit the doctor when the disease has spread beyond the wall of the colon or rectum or to distant parts of the body, which decreases the chances of recovery from colon cancer.

According to figures from Bowel Cancer UK, more than 41,200 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK each year.

It affects about 40 out of 100,000 adults per year in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute.
