Jamie Carragher believes Roberto De Zerbi is the new favorite to become Liverpool manager after reports claimed Ruben Amorim’s move to Anfield was unlikely.
With Jurgen Klopp stepping down at the end of the season and ending his trophy-laden nine-year spell, the Reds continue the search for his successor.
The process is spearheaded by incoming sporting director Richard Hughes, who will officially take up his role working under Michael Edwards this summer after being hired by FSG’s Football CEO and lured from Bournemouth.
Sporting Lisbon’s Amorim was widely believed to be the leading candidate to succeed Klopp, but The Athletic They have now poured cold water on the speculation, with a new report linking the highly-rated 39-year-old to West Ham.
That has sparked fresh talk after the apparent blow taken by Anfield figures and the likes of De Zerbi, Arne Slot and Gary O’Neil, a close associate of Hughes and Edwards, were recently mentioned on social media.

But Carragher, who took to X to share his opinion on the bombshell news, highlighted De Zerbi as Klopp’s most likely replacement for one specific reason.
“Richard Hughes wanted De Zerbi at Bournemouth so he must be the favorite if this is true,” said Carragher, a legendary former Reds defender.
sport mail It is understood that Hughes did want to sign De Zerbi at the Vitality Stadium, but Brighton beat them to seal the Italian’s signature.
De Zerbi has received praise for his eye-catching work at Brighton, having taken them to Europe for the first time and guided them to the last 16 of the Europa League.
He also secured the Seagulls sixth place in the Premier League last season.
The Reds’ search for their next boss continues with Klopp set to leave at the end of the season.

Liverpool sources have not yet denied that Amorim is out of the running for the job and that the in-demand head coach would be available for £12.8m.
“I’ll say it again: I’m the coach of Sporting,” Amorim said recently, downplaying rumors linking him to Merseyside. “There was no interview with any club, no agreement with any club. I am focused, as always, on defending my club.”
Reports in Portugal incorrectly claimed that Amorim had agreed a deal with Liverpool and those close to Liverpool downplayed this, insisting instead that he had been just one name in a long list of potential candidates.
