Sweden's popular banana pizza has divided the internet: would you try it?

Italians, you may not be able to look at the photographs in this story.

Because we imagined a very popular pizza in Sweden: one with bananas on top.

Swedes’ love of banana pizza has been around for a while, but the Internet only recently caught wind of this quirky culinary trend and has been left baffled.

While there is no official date as to when this strange pizza was introduced to Sweden, it is believed to have originated in the 1960s.

After World War II, Swedes became interested in Polynesian flavors, such as banana and pineapple. In the 1960s, it became quite common to serve banana with ham for dinner. This passion for fruity flavors in savory dishes gave rise to banana stews, curries, and the now ubiquitous banana pizza.

Professor Tellström, a food historian at Stockholm University, said Smithsonian Magazine that pizza is ‘probably related to a quest for exoticism taking place in post-war Europe’.

Sweden's 'kebabpizza' is a popular choice served with doner meat, kebab sauce and salad.

You thought fruit topping was the craziest thing ever? It’s got even more bananas.

Swedish banana pizza is usually seasoned with curry powder and topped with ham and pineapple.

Reddit User ‘0hip’ who tried the pizza says: ‘It turns out to be very good. The banana loses some of its sweetness and caramelizes and with the curry it’s great.’

But user X ‘@bananatkk’ He says the banana pizza was “probably one of the three worst things I’ve ever had in my life.”

User X ‘@anastasia_KVL’ It says: ‘Controversial opinion: Swedish banana curry pizza isn’t that bad! It’s best to stop accepting other people’s opinions and try new things.’

Other unconventional pizzas in Sweden include the ‘Kebabpizza’, usually topped with doner meat, kebab sauce and salad, and the seafood pizza, topped with shrimp and mussels.
