A woman was surprised to discover she was six months pregnant, because she had no lump or symptoms.

Lily Somerton, 21, from King’s Lynn, Norfolk, was still on her period and had no symptoms to indicate she was pregnant, until she felt her stomach move while she was lying down.

Lily, already a mother of one, recognized the feeling from her previous pregnancy and took a test to be sure.

The test came back positive and Lily was immediately scanned and told she was 24 weeks and experiencing a cryptic pregnancy in April 2024.

A cryptic pregnancy is when a woman does not know she is pregnant until the end of the trimester or even until she is in labor.

Doctors told Lily that she may not grow a lump for the rest of her pregnancy, but that her baby, due in July 2024, is healthy.

Lily, a support worker, said: “I was in bed and saw my tummy moving. I took a test and it was positive.

“I went for a scan and they told me I was 24 weeks. I was shocked. How was I so far along? It was surreal. I was still having my periods. They said maybe I wouldn’t get any hits.

Lily became pregnant with her first child, now 19 months old, unexpectedly when she missed her period. She gave birth to him in October 2022 and he weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces.

How common are cryptic pregnancies?

One in 450 pregnant women in the UK don’t know they are having a baby until the 20th week of their pregnancy (halfway), and one in 2,500 women don’t know until they go into labour.

It is a phenomenon known as cryptic pregnancy, also known as “pregnancy denial.”

Cryptic pregnancies typically affect young women, who have never experienced pregnancy, or women who believe they have gone through menopause and choose not to use contraception.

Women with erratic menstrual cycles are also more likely to miss the signs they expect. This is especially true among women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where small cysts grow on the ovaries; Hormonal imbalance often leads to irregular or non-existent periods.

However, there are some women who will continue to have monthly bleeding throughout their pregnancy. In this case, a scan by the local GP may be the only method of confirmation.

Women may simply not expect to find themselves pregnant if they are taking the pill, but those who take it religiously can still get pregnant.

Eight out of 100 women can get pregnant while taking the pill, usually not because of problems with the pill, but with the person taking it, whether because they forgot to take the pill, vomited, or had diarrhea.
